on the fence a while back on pickin up a CZ carbine in x39, but once heard Howa was comin out with one I decided to wait it out. Picked it up bout week ago, did not come with a scope rail:( had to order and wait again. Finally arrived and mounted a scope, and hit the range today.
My version is the multi cam sock with detachable 5 round mag, 22" light contour barrel. It's nice n light easy to hunker around for my pig hunting days and just plinking the 7.62x39 which I'm a huge fan of.

Using wolf 123hp, Sighting in scope at 25y the cluster is a 5 shot group

Same ammo..best group I can get at 50y, but other 5 shot groups are still in red

Next will be 100y with same ammo
One thing that concerns me is couple times I accidentally hit mag release just by quick shouldering and finding hand placement, need to mod a small guard. so far very pleased with purchase

Glad you like the rifle, i very much like the Howa I have. Cant stand the hogue stocks tho. If you dont mind (qnd have a handy scale) could you grab a weight for your set up? I've never been able to pin down an accurate weight on the mini howas.

Very nice rifle and scope set-up. Have thought about getting a bolt action as I literally have a ton of 7.62x39 ammo and only one AK to run it through. I see quite a bit of potential here in terms of dialing in some decent groups.

Why? I'm trying to get every ounce of velocity through that 22" cause I plan on shooting 600y maybe even out 800 for fun

So far they only offer 20" and 22" in this caliber, but a 18.5" Scout Rifle in 7.62x39 would be cool

Congrats!

I love my Savage model 10 in that caliber. I found the 10 oz. Leupold 2-7x33 to be a superb match for the caliber too, with ammo zero'd at 100, the 200 marker is the 4 MOA distance between the cross and where the lower post widens out.

My savage has a 20" barrel and still generates excellent velocities, usually higher than published and factory specs.

Im sorry I wasnt so much asking why you chose 22" because I had done a quick gb search and looked like all they made was 22". I was meaning to ask why Howa went with 22" instead of 20" or 18.5.
I would be more into a 20 or 18.5. But that is not to take away from your rifle which looks very nice.

I know in the caliber 7.62x39 they do offer them also in 20", I did not see a 18" available

Did they make the Howa with .311 bullets in mind like the CZ?
I emailed Howa last week in regards to their barrel if it's a .311"-112 or .308" haven't got a response yet. Cause I will be eventually loading for it. purchased a box of brass 7.62x39 to compare accuracy to the steel case, but need to measure the brass bullets if it's .311 or .308. I might just slug the bore and find out myself

If it makes any difference, my Savage in that caliber shoots .308, .308, .310 and .311 bullets into the same fat hole at 100 yards. Doesn't seem to matter one bit in my gun.

But my bore is .308 too.

Shooting the .311 too much over time might destroy your ability to shoot the .308

Think the 3kths would accelerator bore ware too much? That would be a real reason to go for a .310/11 gun.

Atleast for.guys who wanna shoot cheap ammo

You can get the 20" barrel in featherweight (#1 controur) or heavy (#3 I think but not 100% certain), and you can get the 22" barrel in the standard (#2 contour).

As far as why those lengths/profiles -- because that's what Howa makes for all of their other rifles. Any length/profile combo offered on the mini rifles was previously offered on the standard models -- I assume it's just a cost cutting measure.

Well .311 to .308 (without splitting hairs on individual bullet to bullet discrepancy) I think would eventually erode that .308 out to .311 which wouldn't affect the plinking loads, but you'd eventually see .308 handloads lose their accuracy and be stuck with only the 7.62 weights after awhile.

Which would you buy? Why

Which would you buy? Why

I bought the CZ 527 youth carbine in 7.62x39 one and a half years ago. If I bought a Howa mini, it would be the 20" #1 contour. For me, the 7.62x39 is a short range deer cartridge (150-200 yard max) packaged in a rifle that's smaller and lighter than my 308, and the thinner and shorter barrel makes more sense, to me, for those circumstances.

I've put a patridge post and peep sight on my 527 -- six pounds (with ammo and sling) and 36" long.

Update using 5 different types of x39 ammo shooting at 50y
The 2 targets on top were brass cased. found the Howa shoots well for me, using these types of ammo
Scoped set at 4.5 magnification shooting these groups
