I've been a pistol guy but would like to delve into rifle marksmanship. Used to have an RPR (Ruger) and it was nice, but sold it to pay bills. This time around, came upon a Howa HCR in .308 and it is on its way.

One question I have is that I need to find a mount, and I can find a rail for a Howa 1500 Long Action, and a Howa 1500 Short Action.

The Legacy/Howa website mentions that an EGW 20MOA rail comes with scoped rifle packages, and I can find these EGW rails easy enough, but again I'm trying to figure out if I want the long action rail or short action.

This is probably an ignorant question, but keep in mind I'm learning.

Every rifle manufacturers definition of long and short is somewhat different. MOST manufacturers chamber 308 in their version of a short action, but there are exceptions. Tikka only makes long actions and all are built on a long action. Every Howa I've seen in 308 was on a short action. But a Howa short action will be longer than a Remington short action, and a Savage short action will be a lot longer than either.

Some mounts made for Remington are the same as Howa. The long actions are all exactly the same. If you're buying 1 piece bases those made for a Remington will not fit. But 2 piece bases for any Remington will fit any Howa.
