Does anyone have any info on the Howa Ranchland Compact in .308? What about the scope that comes with it? I think it is a Nikko-Stirling night eater.I saw the rifle and scope combo at the shop today in a camo pattern and kind of liked it.

I have a couple of friends with Howas, and they both like them. They are usually a good value for the price.

The Nikko Stirling scopes are not very clear and I wouldnt trust it on a .30cal rifle. However if you can get past the lack of clarity, it may last you awhile - one friend has kept it on his .223 for years and it still shoots good.

Accurate gun, but heavy for what it is. The scope exacerbates that. I'd scope it myself, with something a lot lighter.

8.75lbs with a scope. It is a pound on the heavy side. The Howa's I own (3) and the ones I have experience with (more than 10) have all been good. The Nikko Sterling scope isn't bad for the money. It holds zero and is pretty clear and bright. Still, it is advertised to shoot "MOA @ 100 yards" and Legacy backs this up. It is not a guarantee, but IME, if your rifle will not shoot close to that they will fix or replace it. It is a good rifle for the money.

One nice thing is the magazine capacity. 5+1

I have a Howa Lightning 1500 in 30.06. It is indeed heavy,in fact it is the heaviest rifle I own. That isn't really a bad thing. It is very accurate and reliable. I'm sure the Ranchland Compact will be too. No experience with the Nikko though.
