just curious about the 327. saw one at the local emporium today. i'll probably buy it based only on the gun's looks, but should i decide to shoot/hunt w/ it, how good of a round is this for general range duty, and maybe even a little hunting?

in other words, what does the 327 do really well?

Mine is a Charter Arms Target Patriot with nearly a thousand rounds of hand loaded 327 and almost the same of 32 H&R Magnum thru it and it just keeps getting better.
Cast gas checked Lyman 311316 bullets over A#9 for 327 and cast 100 gr over A#7 for 32 Magnum.
Works well for me!!!!!!!

I have shot the S&W 327JM PC version with 5 inch titanuim shrouded barrel and titanium cylinder in ICORE and Steel Challenge matches with light 38 Special loads - 158 gr. bullets at ca 700+ fps. Surprisingly the gun comes back on target a bit faster than my 627. I would not want to experience shooting full power 357 Magnum ammo through the 327 - I would want some additional weight to soak up some of the recoil energy.

I'd buy a sp101 in .327mag if I got a good price on it.

Uh. What's this thread about anyway?

Yeah, it's just the one post that threw anyone off.

I've been moderately interested in this new cartridge every since the inception. The hype was a little over the top, but I do think it has a place. Heck, the H&R cartridge is cool IMO.

I'd like to know how handloads chronograph and what the 'Ruger load' potential looks like.

Since people want an arm & a leg for a .32 Mag S&W Model 16 :(, the GP-100 in .327 is calling my name. It ought to shoot awfully flat and make long shots easier. It could be loaded from .32 Long to max .327 ballistics. :)

Good for? Fun I reckon.

Check out the handload and chronograph data over on Gunblast where both a Freedom Arms 97 and a custom Single Six were tested. If I remember right, 1600-1700fps with 100gr bullets.

I'm using a 4" barrel and I want to stay with 115 gr. cast gas checked bullets. I don't know what speed I'm at, I'm still playing and about to move to H-110 and than possibly Li'l Gun. I hope I can maintain the accuracy level I'm at now, Jack rabbits @ 150 yards.

My problem with the Rugers I had in .32 H&RM, a 4.6" SSM & 4" SP101 alike, was the oversized chambers. Commercial loads and my reloads both measured .334" OD - but shot cases grew to .338" - too much - the cases are worked too much this way and have resulting short lives. I wonder how that new S&W 632 measures up - pricey, but I bet it will be closer in spec's - not so sure about the GP-100.

Jacks @ 150 is fine; I'm still exploring powder performance. I hunted jacks for years with a RNMBH, 6 1/2", 357 and had a lot of fun and took a few way out past possible just because they were there. I really like 32 caliber revolvers and the 327 is a very welcome addition. And FUN!!!!!!!!!

I used to travel to hunt winter jacks the same way some people travel to shoot prairie dogs.

If I were 21 again, and just starting to purchase handguns, I would have to give SERIOUS consideration to the .327 cartridge and guns.

* The S&W 632, six shot J-frame is a phenomenal carry gun - both in the 3" hammered, and 2" hammerless versions.

* The 8 shot 5" Ruger Blackhawk is one hellacious camp / truck / house gun - low recoil (at 48oz), plenty of power, and a capacity unseen in revolvers of any power.

With the ability to fire 4 different 32 caliber cartridges in both of these practical sidearms, any new hand gunner would do well to consider them.

Actually the 327 Magnum revolvers are capable of firing five (5) different cartridges:
32 S&W
32 S&W Long
32 H&R Magnum
327 Federal Magnum
32 Auto
May not do them well, but it will do them.
You could throw into the mix the old 32 Short and Long Colt, but that would be a real waste of expensive and hard to find ammunition. I have both, but I use them in my Colt Police Positive chambered for 32 Colt.

My S&W 627 is an eight shot .357 mag.

I like mine. It's a Ruger SP101. I like Ruger revolvers and this one lives up to my expectations. It could use a trigger job, but as I don't know of any really good revolver gunsmiths in Houston, I'm not going to have it done unless I find one. Meanwhile, I can do the snap cap thing and work the trigger to smooth it out (eventually).

I like it because I can also shoot .32 shorts and longs and .32 H&R Mags. Pretty cool. The .32 shorts are a hoot, btw, and using them means I can shoot a lot longer. The self defense rounds are no worse in recoil than a regular .38spl and the gun absorbs recoil better than my little snubbie anyway because the snub is an airweight.

I'd recommend one.

I purchased a 327 Ruger SP101 awhile ago and only recently began shooting it. So far, I'm in love! Factory 100g loads are a handful, make no mistake about it. I handloaded some Hornady 90g LSWC and they are fantastic. Definitely mouse fart loads, but a ton of fun to plink with. I started out with 2 grains of Titegroup, which was giving decent accuracy but I was seeing a lot of unburnt powder. I just loaded up some more yesterday and increased the charge to 3 grains to see if that helps at all. I also loaded up some 100g Rainier flat points with 10g of 2400 as a heavier but not quite max load. Only changes I've made to the gun so far have been the addition of some reduced power Wolff springs. The 327, and the SP101, are great fun.
