How's the Stag model 1 AR15??

I had a RRA Tasc Rifle that I sold a few years ago because I wanted a flat top instead of a AR with the permanently affixed carry handle. I also wanted to upgrade a few of my hunting rifles with better scopes, which I did. Depending on how our tax return is, I might buy another AR. It'll be used for target, plinking and sitting at the front of our gun safe in between to my 11-87 12 ga. (18.5" barrel, 6 shot mag) and my wife's 870 20 ga. Jr. model (18.5" barel, 6 shot mag). It might see 500 or so rounds a year. No type of competition, mainly a fun gun and SHTF gun. I might get a longer barrel varmint type upper down the road.

So my question is, does a Stag model 1 sound like an AR that will work for what we're going to use it for? I'd get another RRA, I like the mid length hand guard, mainly because that's what I had before. However, my dealer has a few Stag's for $800 to $840. He'll more then likely come down a little. RRA's seem to be harder to get. They seem to have long wait times on their rifles. He also has a couple of Smith & Wesson MP15's for $850. I'm not sure which models they are. They don't have front or rear sights. I know they're not the Sport models.

I bought a stag model 2 right after I came back from my first (of 3) deployment to Iraq, as a Marine grunt and I have loved it the whole time. The only thing I changed was a mil surplus quad rail with a broom handle. No problems...always fired, dead balls accurate, awesome rifle

I bought the Stag model 2 last year and have been very happy with it.
I mounted a Lucid HD-7 2x red dot, and it makes a great coyote rifle.

I'm LH, and wanted a LH AR. I have a Model 3L, and I love it. I've had it in as many configurations as I can think of, and it's worked well with them all. Never a hiccup with any ammo I've fed it. Good, all-around AR if you ask me (both in terms of quality of parts and the fit/finish).

I shot my friends left hand model 3 and really liked it even though it was a left handed model. I heard Stag really stands behind their life time warranty 100% without question.

I'd use the model 1 with the removable carry handle so I can shoot it until I can get an EOTech or some other optic, which won't be any time soon. I'm going to try for a co-witness setup with the iron sights in the lower 1/4 or 1/3 of the optic. I like RRA's Dominator setup. I like both the front and rear sight to alway's there.

I've got a 2L and I love it to pieces No issues so far. The only problem is finding time to get out to the range

Stag rifles are fine - reliable, accurate. Not sure if it's still the case but as I understand it, at one time Stag built most of the components used by S&W in their M&P15 rifles.

I love my 2H upper. IMO, it is one of the best deals out there. The upper is an absolute hammer. It ejects brass in the same place all day long, doesn't hiccup on any ammo I have found to date, and is accurate enough. Maybe one day I will throw a scope on it and see just how accurate. I would estimate it would do much better than 2" at 100 yards with decent ammo.

I'm not sure you need decent ammo. My model 2L is a lot better than I am.

I completely love my Stag Model 1. Made a few minor modifications to make it perfect (for me). She runs like a champ on any ammo I put in there. Accurate too.

I have a 1L, lefty version of the 1. For your specified purposes, it will do fine. One thing that is nice is that the carrying handle is removeable by simply undoing two large screws that attach it to the picatinny rail. That makes mounting optics easy, should you desire to do so.
