Good Afternoon, and happy Veterans day. My HR model 999 is experiencing a major problem at this time. For some reason, the hammer is not freely being pulled back when I pull the trigger, and if I try to pull the hammer back by myself it wont lock back all the way, and is VERY hard to pull back half-way. Is this a common issue/easy fix or is my sight-less revolver even worse off?

When mine used to get that way, it was dirty. A good s cleaning and it would work like new again.

Try removing the grips, then remove the hammer spring rod and pawl. I'd be almost be willing to bet you have a piece of that pawl broken off,..and it's wedging under the hammer and preventing it from being able to cock fully.

If it's not that,..I couldn't say.

Thanks Thunder! It was a loose white piece of plastic (the pawl possibly?) Removed it and it works flawlessly now. Don't really know where to put it, but the pistol is working without it so we'll see how it goes. FYI I'm obviously not much of a revolver afficionado, but it's an heirloom.

SGTMeatballsGlad that was the fix. That's a weak link on most of the H&R/NEF revolvers. Otherwise a pretty good gun for what they are. I have an old H&R 929 2 inch, 9 shooter,... that has been treated pretty badly over the years,..but it just keeps on ticking them away. Nuemrich,(sp)...by any other name,...has been able to keep me in supply of that pawl,...might want to pick up a couple of them if you shoot that piece much,..the nylon/plastic ones tend to break pretty easy. There is a metal one that is available as well,..but it takes a little fiddling to make it work right. I put one of those in the last time mine had the issue,..and bought a spare. Have not had to change it since.

It was a loose white piece of plastic (the pawl possibly?)
The pawl or hand is the part that pushes on the rachet (teeth on the rear of the cylinder) to rotate the cylinder. Of necessity, it has to be made of steel. The white plastic you found could have been from packaging when the gun was first assembled, packed and shipped.

The white "plastic" piece you found is one of the arms of the "pusher head" installed at the top of the main spring assembly. The "pusher head" provides force to the hammer. This plastic is actually a form of nylon and breakage of this part is fairly common. In the present state, missing part of the pusher, it will work for awhile but eventually it will fail. You can get replacements here: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=7937
I've changed six of these on various H&R models made after 1952. I suggest getting the entire assembly - guide rod, spring and head (Part 37A). Good luck and enjoy your Sportsman.

You must be a psychic CajunBass, I do not have a rear sight (must've fallen off years ago), and staring at the rear screws and how they unscrew themselves by nothing more than gravity does not surprise me anymore. My gun is obviously haunted :p . I have it loaded with rat shot due to a snake problem where I hunt at so it's not much of a deal.

As for the knowledge on the mechanics of the revolver, thanks for the heads up. Everyone seems to have that "revolver's are always more reliable" stigma, but as I see mine with sight's that fall off and parts that fail, it's obviously a per-gun statement.
