Hungarian AMD-65 762x39, anyone know much about the quality of the FEG rifles from Hungary. How do they compare with other AK rifles ? They look pretty cool. Just looking for another shooter. Been thinking bout getting another AK, but been along time since I bought one (Norinco AK purchased in 90's) and haven't been keeping up with the new offerings in AK rifles. Your thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.

kemper,
i do not own a amd-65 but i have seen photos of them in my gun book. they have a flimsy stock and it is mostly made out of sheet metal. but as with any ak i would assume they would be very reliable and mostly be jam free with any type of ammo you throw at it

How do they compare with other AK rifles?
Smaller, funky gripping, hotter and a bit more noise due to barrel length... I've never been a fan of folding stocks due to cheek weld whilst bearded (ouch). 20 rd magazines are nice, 30's will fit in but gets busy and close enough to front grip to make simple things, like gripping the forend not quite so simple a thing in a hurry. I only shot a friends once. Not for moi. YMMV (I do like the weird factor and would love to "like" one, but alas...)

FEG = good. Compared to your Nork, non-traditional but will go bang every time.

They were designed for tankers and such weren't they? Small space, small carbine.

Pretty good price actually, nowadays.

Pictures are nice. :)

Forget about cheek weld on an AMD. It's a cool toy but tiring to shoot. I found it front heavy and awkward with the front pistol grip. Still an awesome AK to have in your collection. Plus it fits in a tennis racket bag when folded.

All in all, I've only heard good things about them. If I add a 7.62 AK to my collection, it will be an AMD-65. The stocks are not at all flimsy. Yes, you can't get a cheekweld but you can buy nifty little extension from AMDTech that resolves that issue. To me, a 7.62 AK is really for fairly short ranges, so the compact AMD-65 fits the bill well and the muzzle break while creating huge, loud fireballs, also helps to tame the recoil. All in all, while a bit funky looking, the AMD-65 is a solid rifle.

I have 2 AMD 63 made by putting an AMD 63 kit on a pre 94 FEG "lower" . They are totally kewl IMHO. The AMD 65 wuz never imported as the short barrels would make them NFA weapons. I do NOT like the stock either. So if you buy an AMD 65 it will be on somebodies fabricated reciever with a bunch of parts to make it 922 compliant and the barrel will be extended permanently . The real FEG guns are about the best AK IMHO, the AMD 65 made up kits are NOT real FEGs and I think they aren;t that great.

Really ? The ad I saw said they were FEG lower receivers. Is that not correct ?

The ad is correct. AMDs sold by TGI are made in Hungary on FEG 2000M receivers and feature chrome-lined bores. As with other imported semi-autos, the mag wells are opened up upon import, evil features added and the necessary bits swapped out.

FEG-made AK-style rifles have been lauded for their quality for decades. It's a testament to the red headed stepchild nature of the AMD-65 (as well as TGI's occasional inability to properly weld on a muzzle brake) that these rifles aren't more popular or expensive.

I just bought one from centerfire systems a couple days ago. Its a tgi build on a feg receiver. I'll do a mini range report when i get it.

I would not take $1,000 for mine.

Parts are easy to come by. The folding stock is very strong and works well for me - it's actually as easy for me to use as the short little stocks on other AKs. And I like the fact this rifle is easy to get in tight spaces, like a car. Who needs a SBR when I have this?

I don't notice the muzzle flash when I'm shooting.

Plus, it shoots all ammo, every time, with every mag I own.

The people who knock it are, as usual, those who don't shoot it.

you have alot of options, how about an underfolder, also see some on milled receivers, then theres always a saiga while im sure the amd 65 is 922 compliant like any ak clone is now they just didnt use the receiver as one of the parts. the only real drawback to the amd 65 is the uncomfortable stock and the welded on barrel extension versus a standard length barrel the sights are closer together on the 12.6 inch 65 barrel and may not shoot as accurate but not like an ak is really known for its accuracy anyway.
