I'm not much of an AK guy, but I have a bunch of 7.62x39 and no rifle with which to shoot it. Got a couple bonuses coming up and saw PSA has Hungarian AMD-63 rifles for sale, both around $500. Sadly I missed out on the era of $300 or less AK variants. This one looks to be about the least expensive one on the market.

So... I could go for another SKS, or build a 7.62x39 AR upper (I've been considering a .300 or 6.5 Grandel already), but kinda have an itch for an AK.

The front vertical grip is pretty goofy looking, and I'd go with the fixed stock over the folding wire stock, if I go this route at all.

Will these take most standard AK accessories and parts?

generally speaking youre not able to replace side folding stocks with fixed stocks on AKs unless the side folding stock is specifically made for the fixed stock trunnions and most military folding stocks (including i believe the hungarian wire folders) are not.. youre better off finding a rifle that already has a fixed stock if thats what you want

if youre into building weapons to tailor them to what you want, you can always buy a parts kit and some basic tools and build your own AK

If your leaving the stock the way it is, you'll have no issue replacing the front end. The Hungarian AK's were nice, except for the metal forearm and that silly looking forward pistol grip. All easy to fix. The AMD65 has the wire stock, but it can too be fixed with some help from AMD65tech.com.

That stock is my favorite AK stock by far. Pretty easy to get used to and it folds the right way and has one of the only rubber buttpads on an AK. Try it before you ditch it and whatever you do don't put an AR-15 buttstock on there. Sacrilege.

Check out akfiles.com. The PSA builds aren't getting the best reviews. There's nothing wrong with the Hungarian parts at all, it's the build. I think I read that PSA is using a cast front trunnion. It may not be Hungarian.
I built a Hungarian AK47 not to long ago and it's a great rifle.
You might want to check out Atlantic Fire Arms. Go people and usually good rifles.
I'm AR fan but recently renewed my interest in the AK. I'm up to 5 now.

meh, that forum has turned to crap the last few months.. admins on power trips and what not, starting drama with members and then banning them.. id advise somewhere else

the original preban AMD63 Hungarian rifles are the best of the AKMs IMHO. Very light, very well made and finished and the fore grip works great with a little rounding on the end of the grip toward the mag well which then allows the speed knock out technique of reloading. I like the metal fore end alot and have Ultimak rails on my two with Aimpoint M2 sights in factory low rings which allow lower 1/3 co witness. :)

My old school SA85M Hungarian AK underfolder. Very nicely made with the folding stock still quite sturdy and solid and makes for a really compact package with the stock folded. Have been thinking about getting another AK (fixed stock this time), to keep it company.

They can be very crude and a bunch of butt holes but the best builders and information on the AK is available there. It just kinda goes right along with the crudeness of the AK
