Hunter killed by Grizzly

things happen

Sad for his family and friends, but life is dangerous if your living it.Grizzlies are common here too..we get them here at home. They are quick, and cover rough ground with ease.We are aware that we see them and sometimes ,most times you are not prepared.A hand gun would be useless and so is a rifle really.been there. It happens so fast.

I wouldn't drink a latte at deer camp, nor would I wear my camo to downtown DC on a business trip.

But I might take a latte while discussing where to place my new servers with my contract officer. Just as well, I will take some black coffee from my father-in-law while discussing who is hunting where for opening morning.

As far as the real story at hand....bear safety is just like gun safety. Sometimes people are so experienced that they let things slide....like having a partner. And sometimes they are just ignorant...both are sad to hear.

That's so sad. But on a more positive note, at least he was doing what he so much enjoyed. Better than getting killed by a city thug being kidnapped and tortured by some maniac, at least in my thinking.

I've never hunted in Griz territory, but I have had numerous very close encounters with black bear, and one very, very close call with a mt. lion. It's just part of the hunting environment, and something we, as hunters, must be aware of, and on our toes about.

God bless him!

I've been hiking fairly regularly up here in northwest MT with my dogs and carry a Marlin 1895 SBL loaded with Barnes VOR-TX 300gr ammunition (.45-70 Govt.). Maybe an 870 would be a better choice. I should probably buy a can of bear spray but keep putting it off. There are supposedly black bear, mountain lion, wolves, coyotes, deer and elk where I hike but so far I've only seen deer, deer poop, elk poop and what is most likely bear poop but my dogs run all over so they most likely scare most critters away. I would love to see a mountain lion but they're elusive for sure.
I spend quite a bit of time up in the Flathead Valley area...Bigfork, Kailspell...to
Glacier Park.
I will be hutning up there soon.
I also, have a Marlin .45-70 actually it's now a WWG .457 Magnum...slicke up & customized by WWG.
But good as it is, don't know if it could be employed quick enough in this close range surprise...bet he almost stepped on these bears...10 yds. or less, forget it.

I'd probably go for my S&W .500 Mag. Revolver if I could...unless the Rifle is in hand...ready to go, kinda iffy.

I have a Ruger .416 Ruger Mag. , TWO .375H&H Mags ALL bolt guns, but they may be too slow unless chambered & safety off, not the best way to proceed safety wise.
also a nice compact Merkel SR1 semi-auto...in 9.3x62, which may be a tad quicker?

But given the odds, and since Grizz is "protected" , no fear of man, and yes, those "shots' we take at that Elk...may be the DINNER-BELL...don't ever want to find out!

Were you really that put out by the Latte comment DNS? I understood what he was getting at and I have to admit to drinking a foo foo flavored coffee from time to time and it didn't really bother me at all.

LOL, I don't even drink coffee at all. I just see no reason in claiming a faux conflict about a tragic situation that has nothing to do with the situation. The "Latte types" had done nothing wrong, so the notion that we need to get our shots in on them first seems very low road.

grizzlies

We have grizzlies here, sometimes around the house and inside the chicken house. Things like that just happen ,yesterday a hunter from Fernie bc was mauled. Hope he is ok

Fernie isn't that far from me. I was up there in May. I would NOT like to have Grizzlies around my house. When I go out to the garage or the reloading room in the dark I think about my order in the food chain.

Not just that but he also makes comments about others being "Sub Species".

If you review every post made by the OP in this thread he either makes goading comments or outright misinformation. Some websites are ok with this type of banter, but I think we rise above that. No one is saying he can't make the comments, they're just not suited to what THR represents. In fact there are many websites he can join that cater to the type of conversation that he brings to the table. In fact I belong to one. But I also make an effort not to bring that here.

Obvious troll is obvious.

Mods, please close this one down.

Generally, by the third page, more than enough has been said.

I note that if folks simply ignore trivia such as the latte reference, a thread flows far more smoothly. On the Internet, being thin-skinned is not worthwhile. :)
