soon im going to get stuff for a friend to load me some 308 ammo. Im considering several the ballistic tip accubond Honrnady SST and interlock
Sierra Gameking Barnes tipped TSX I do understand Deer is'nt that hard to kill.Only reason thinking Accubond or TSX if one was to be close range.
Do you of you use any of these and what are your thoughts

I like the Sierra Gamekings. Took a nice doe with one this year--my first with reloads. Due to some brush, the shot placement was less than ideal, but the bullet performed perfectly and she went right down. I'd say the terminal performance was similar to Remington Core-lokts which I've always liked. The SGK shoots better in my rifle and has a better BC.

I'm not a fan of the polymer tipped bullets. They seem to expand TOO much and can damage alot of meat.

BTW, You may want to re-post your question in the reloading section.

I load 150 grain Barnes tsx in my .308 and have never had a failure to expand at close or long ranges. Luckily it is extremely accurate in my rifle. Go with a midrange load of Varget and fine tune from there.
Good Hunting

Another vote for the Sierra Gameking. That is all I use for deer anymore now that everything else has gone so "premium" in price. Your .308 is not going to drive them fast enough to worry about blowing them up. I use them in .270, 30-06, and 7MM-08 all with great results.

I use 165g SGK and 165g Interlock. Either will get the job done. Both hit hard and will easily bring down a deer. Bagged 6 buck so far this year. 4 using Interlock and two using SGK. I was impressed with the size of the exit wound with SGK. Left a hole about the size of a half dollar. Lung shot and deer ran about 15 yards leaving pieces of lung along the way.

Load data for either one that I'm using.

165g SGK
42.2g Varget
WLR
OAL=2.750

165g Interlock
42.2g Varget
WLR
OAL=2.800

168g SMK
42.2g Varget
WLR
OAL=2.800

SMK's= 3 shots in the same hole(almost) at 100 yards.

Sierra Game King! It has every bit of the performance the other bullets claim and market to you.
Except more accurate and a much better value. I used the pro hunter this year. Great bullet
in 308 at 200 yards.

.308 Bullets

The .308 Win. is an amazing round. I've loaded for several different rifles in that chambering with Nosler BTs in 150 and 165 gr., Speer SPBT 150 gr., and the old faithful Rem. PSPCL 150 gr. All have shown the capability of 1/2 MOA if the shooter does his part and all have performed well on deer and hogs from 20 to 275 yards.

Why not use the good old fashion Nosler Partition?
#1 hunting bullet used across the nation for a reason.
Drops moose faster than you can say "Yep, it's dead."

I have to add my .02 for the Remington CoreLoct in 150 or 180 grain. They have been around just about forever and have harvested their share of critters. My thought is why mess with proven success. Yes the latest whiz bang bullet may work better at X distance but where I hunt 100 YDS is always the max so why not get the least expensive bullet that will do the job well. Bottom line is find a bullet/load your rifle will eat with stellar results and stick to it. YMMV

I vote 150gr Nosler balistic tips, as accurate as SMKs in my 308, but they cost twice as much!:(

Boring old 150 Gr Core-Lokt's. 150 instead of 165 because that is what they had in stock way back when. They worked, so I stuck with them. Same for the .30-30, 150 Gr Core-Lokt's. Only difference is pointed SP in the .308, and SP in the .30-30.

I have no doubt many other bullets work well also. 150 to 165 Grs of lead through your vitals would kill you too, no matter what brand.

Match the bullet to the velocity, hit them where you need to, and it will turn out well.

I worked with a fellow who was shooting pin holes through deer with his .300 Win Mag at close range and losing deer. I got him to try some Core-Lokts and he dropped the first one he shot with them in its tracks. He became a CL fan, but in all reality, any bullet matched to the velocity better than the too tough ones he was using would have killed the deer.

I have been a fan of Hornady bullets. Probably because that is what the local store stocked. They work and the price was right. I second, "any pointed soft point".

I reckon all you mentioned would work well. I have on game experience with Remington Core Lokts, Nosler ballistic tips, and Hornady SSTs. I have no complaints about any of the three.

I like the sst. It is accurate in both my 6.8 and my 257 weatherby mag. I have considered loading it for my 308 but my 99e likes the cheap federal stuff so I haven't yet. That said the sst almost blows through 2 plow disks from 300 yards and those things are hard. These are very accurate bullets. I find the powder of choice for me is either h4895 or Varget in the 308. Both of my 308s have done well with these powders and multiple bullet types.

i know i dont need a premium buttlet for whitetails im mostly looking for something in case of a close 20 yd shot that would'nt blow up am also looking at speer hot cors

My little .308 has mostly been loaded with factory CL's since I got it 12 or so years ago. I didn't really see a need to handload for it since I could usually find the factory stuff on sale after hunting season for only around $10 a box. I usually stocked up with a dozen or so boxes at a time. After the price jump in recent years, I also found some Federal SP's on sale and stocked up on them as well. Even with this however I have run through most of them shooting hogs.

Like a couple of others years ago I purchased the bulk 150gr CL's mostly since I have several '06's and they make a decent load for them. I have recently worked up a load in both the .308 and '06 with the 150's using H-4895 which is almost a direct duplicate in both accuracy and velocity of the factory stuff.

If there is any doubt of their ability, feel free to browse the links below my sig. There are plenty of hogs which have succumbed to them at ranges measured in feet to out past 400yds. In most all cases if no major bone was hit the terminal performance was textbook expansion with only a small trimming job around affected area. As with any cup and core bullet if you hit a major bone your looking at destruction and some major trimming.

To be honest, there have only been two deer shot with this particular rifle, one by me and the other by my grandson this fall. Both rounds were CL's, and both deer were DRT.
