ok here it is....

im new to guns AND im new to reloading.

i bought some .308 150 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter soft point bullets to reload. But when i looked at them i noticed that it has a fairly large lead tip. i think it might have feed problems.

do i just make a few dummy rounds and see? what do you think?

Your Garand should feed just about anything you want to shove through it. I've shot everything from 110 gr. Spire Points to 180 gr. Round Nose through my various Garands and they've never failed to feed. Years ago, my favorite jackrabbit load for the Garand was a 150 gr. RN .30-30 bullet pushed to about 1,900 fps. It was something to behold on a running jack..............

Hope this helps.

Fred

I've fired several hundred 125gr Sierra ProHunters SP and 150gr Speer soft points. Neither has ever caused and jams/hang ups. I've been using W748 and Varget for Garand loads and been quite happy.

Make sure you use Garand approved powders and load data.

Happy shooting.

i bought varget powder for the reloading. im glad to here that you have not had feed problems. good news for me.

What ReloaderFred said, good information.

Stick to bullet weights considered normal for the M1 (150 to 180 grains) but folks, including me, have had good results with bullets down to 110 grains. Accurate at 100-200 yards and takes a bit off the recoil. I have only tried spire points though.

Keeping pressures safe for the op rod are key. If you use powders safe for the M1 and at M1 loading levels, things will be fine with the standard gas plug. Varget is a good powder for the M1.

If you use bullets lighter than 150 grains, there are a couple members on the CMP forum that have posted good loading information for the light bullets in the M1.

If you stray from what is considered safe for the M1, an adjustable gas plug is required to protect the op rod. If you use commercially available hunting ammunition, an adjustable gas plug is a must.

For your information, in case you have not heard, the concern for the op rod in the M1 is based on the port pressure, not chamber pressure. The port pressure with newer, slower burning powders is too high for safe operation of the op rod and bending the op rod becomes a real possibility. Sticking to powders safe for the M1, such as Varget, H4895, IMR4895, and a few others, the port pressure is at a safe level for the op rod.

Hope this helps and enjoy hunting with your M1.

Vargant may be a little slow (unless you are using a schuster gas adjuster).

Don't know what you are hunting, but if its medium sized game, 150 0r 165g Nosler Partitions are excellent. Great powders for the Garand are IMR 4064, 4895 (these are supposedly the original 30-06 and Garand powders.

Varget is between IMR 4895 and IMR 4064 and well faster than IMR 4320, consider the slowest powder specified.

I like it because I have an 8lb jug that I also use in my 223 and 243.

My $.02
