NOTE: If this belongs in the hunting section, please move. :)

Well this year I am going to do some squirrel hunting in Kansas. I am originally from Illinois and I took a hunter's safety course several years ago while in Illinois.

The other day when I went to get my Small Game License at a Kansas Wal-Mart, they asked to see my hunter's safety card. Problem is, it is currently sitting in a drawer in Illinois! I told them this and they said "just make sure you take it when you go hunting" and they issued me the hunting license.

So now I have my small game license, but don't have my hunter's safety card. What are the penalties if I go out for squirrels and have my license but not the hunter safety card? I really want to go 'squirrelin this weekend to get some fry meat, but I'm scared that if I am caught without the safety card I will end up in a prison or will be fined and ticketed.

What should I do?

Check the State laws.

In Tennessee, your hunting license is evidence you've had the Hunter Safety course, as it is required to obtain the license.

Straight off of KDWP website;

"All hunters age 16 to age 27, and all hunters age 12 to age 16 hunting alone, must carry proof of hunter education while hunting."

Penalties can be severe including fine, loss of firearm and loss of hunting privileges.

I would strongly suggest you read Kansas hunting regulations which are on-line.

Here is a link to the IDNR website to print an Official Replacement Hunter Safety Education Card http://dnr.state.il.us/safety/safety.htm.

I just tried it, and by entering a) Last Name; b) First Name; and, c) Date of Birth (information you obviously have for yourself) I was able to immediately print an official replacement card.

If you run into a problem, the IDNR has an e-mail link that I have found in the past they answered the very next day.

Good luck with the card and the Kansas squirrels!

Il.Bil - that link only works for about 25 years ago. Any further back (like me) and they no longer have the records.
I was trying to find my old card as it would let me skip 4 hours of the CCW classes. After emailing through the link on that search page, DNR told me their records only back to about 1977.

Only go back 25 years
Then, When were you born?

The law is pretty clear.
Anyone born on or after July 1, 1957 must be certified by an approved course in hunter education before they can hunt in Kansas EXCEPT that anyone 15 years old and under may hunt without hunter education certification PROVIDED that they are under the direct supervision of an adult 18 years old or older.

RC - the course I took was part of a high school class back in 1970. I didn't actually need to take the course to go hunting as I'm older than the cut-off date. :D
