hunting vs target .22

Yes, but how many would regularly do 1/4" groups at 50 yards? Any of them?

John

I wasn't being serious, just going along with the hyperbole that does have some, if only a bit of, original basis in fact...:)

I wouldn't trust any production gun to do that. The guns I've seen that group smaller than that, and I've seen a good number, are all hand-built. None of them are semiautos. Most are single-shots with receivers only open at the top.

That said, the 60 IS accurate enough that it's a waste not to scope it.

yup..so now the mythical model 60s shoot better than kimber 82's, 40X's, and anchutz .22s.

I call BS..
Mythical??? Have you ever shot a 60 their pretty accurate?I'm not saying their better but for there price they are(not including the anchutz).

I have shot one on many occasions and even owned one for quite a while... I was not impressed by any means... they are fun and do what asked, but I have seen several eat themselve from the inside out (as did mine, with regular cleaning) I got a 10/22 and havent looked back. for my purposes it is more than accurate enough and matches the 60 I had shot for shot. If I decide to shoot match style for extreme accuracy I reach for my Kimber.

Popeyespappy, it looks like great minds think alike.

VQ barrel, Weaver 6X, five pounds 15 ounces, and well under 1/2" groups at 50 with Eley or SK subsonic hollow points.

1/2" is one thing, although still hard to do group after group. Shooting 1/4" or less is a whole 'nother thing. That's pretty much two holes touching or overlapping.

A large proportion of sporting rifles will not shoot consistant 0.5" groups at 50 yds. That includes the Marlin 60. It is a great little rifle for the money, but you would have to prove the "regular 0.25" groups" to me at 50 yds. In fact, few shooters can consistantly shoot 0.25" groups at 50 yds with any rifle. If you can shoot the Marlin that well, I suspect you could win a lot of small bore matches.

Back to the topic at hand.... A good all around 22 rifle is the Marlin 39A. Very hard to beat for general use. Lever actions are just plain fun to shoot and are good for plinking, hunting and some target shooting. They aren't competition rifles.

Another good choice to me would be the Thompson Center R-55 Classic which is a semi-auto rifle. They are usually very accurate right out of the box. You need to keep the action clean on them however. They are made the way rifles used to be made.

Bolt actions.... I like the CZ 452, Savage Mark II Classic, Weatherby Mark XXII, and the old Remington 541's. All of these are sporter rifles. I generally prefer a faster action for plinking. And you often don't need the accuracy of these rifles for small hunting at normal distances. Even though I love these rifles, I do not suggest them for plinking. There are just a lot more fun to shoot rifles around.

I honestly enjoy plinking and hunting with my stock Ruger 10/22 deluxe. It shoots reasonably well and is a blast to shoot when you have the need to do some serious rapid fire plinking.

Choose what you like. The Marlin Model 60 is very popular and a good value for the price like the Ruger 10/22. The Marlin will usually outshoot the Ruger out of the box.

For serious fun plinking and more casual target shooting, a lever gun is my favorite BY FAR. Anyone who tries one of mine so far has agreed.

man i sure wish i had my little 39a back.

my father had given me one when i was 8 years old, which was in '73, then we lost him when i was still very young and my mom had to sell all the guns for financial reasons, which even as a kid, i understood her position.

i could just cry everytime i think about it.

it was a beautiful little golden 39a, and i can still remember how he just stood there, glowing with pride when he gave it to me, and when he was teaching me how to handle it.

i should get another one just to honor him.

lol, sorry for theadjacking.

i think like others have said, a hunting rifle should be light and fast handling. a target rifle will be much heavier, but a bit more accurate.

This is my target .22:

And my hunting .22:

The hunting .22 is light and easy to carry, with reasonable accuracy. The target .22 isn't light or easy to carry but is very accirate. There are some rifles that would split the difference pretty reasonably, but any real .22 target model is going to be a pain to carry around in the field.

I would reccomend just getting an accurate hunting rifle with a good trigger. Marlin semi-autos and 10/22s will most likely have terrible triggers.

My Model 60 will shoot as good as any .22 LR I have seen or shot. I have no need for a $3000 .22 LR.
I'm not saying it's not a good gun, however, I highly doubt it's better than a specialised target rifle. If it were, they would be used in competition a lot more.

A 10/22 with a good Bentz chambered barrel will certainly shoot 1/4" at 50 yards with ammo it likes. If I stuck a high power scope on the light one pictured in my post above, and caught a nice calm day, I'm sure I could produce a few in a row.

Here's five 50 yard groups from another one of my 10/22s, shot with Wolf MT and the scope cranked to 24X.

That rifle weighs nine pounds and lacks provision for a sling, so it wouldn't be my first choice for a hunting rifle. The top rifle weighs four pounds less and has a fixed power 6X scope, so it wouldn't be my first choice for a bench rifle. As far as I can tell, there isn't much if any difference in intrinsic accuracy between the two, just weight and optic differences that make the heavy one easier to shoot little groups with.

Just forget most of what I said. I see know he said regularly. And I'v only shot one semi that got 1/4 inch groups regularly and I'm glad its my 10/22:D
