I know very little about the .22 handguns and rifles. I was thinking about procuring on or the other for a survival type situation. I already won 2 .308 rifles and a number of handguns in 9mm and .40 S&W.

What would a reliable, but inexpensive option be in .22? I'm thinking more for hunting rabbit and small game vs plinking.

Bolt actions and single shots are the final word in reliability in rifles.

Less moving parts, less complicated, goes bang every time.

There are a ton of used marlins out there that would be great... but for your stated purpose I would get a bolt action.

Marlin, Savage and CZ all make great guns.

Accuracy for the money... get a Savage.

Ruger MK II

I have owned several .22 lr handguns over the last 20 years. I currently only own one. It is a Ruger MK II and I believe it the "BEST" all around .22 lr handgun around. :D

As far as rifles go. There are many good choices. Savage, Marlin, Ruger, Remington, Henry and CZ. I really enjoy the Henry lever-action. Accurate and a lot of fun.

The Ruger 10/22 gets my vote for semi-auto fun though.......

I can't think of many 22's that don't fit that bill. Most of them are reasonably accurate, and reliable. They're more than adequate for plinking and small game hunting. You can spend about as little or as much as you want. Marlin, Savage, Remington, Ruger, and a bunch more come to mind, even more if you shop the used market. Just find one you like at a price you want to pay.

Personally, I'm a Ruger 10/22 guy (Ruger handguns too) for what you're talking about, but there are plenty of others. And I would look for a used one of whatever. There are plenty of good, used 22's on the market.
