Any recommendations on what game to hunt with this gun? What grain is good for deer?

Been many years (mid-late '70's), but I took a couple of deer with my 6-1/2" barrel .357 Blackhawk. Was using the Rem 158-Gr SJHP load. There are so many much better loads now.

One other thing I forgot to mention earlier...Check with the local "Game & Fish" guys where you plan to hunt. Ohio requires a minimum .357 caliber handgun and a 5" barrel is shortest allowed.

This stuff's a buck a shot, but lays Bambi's down real fast . . . .

Buffalo Bore 180 gr. LFN-GC (1400 fps ME 783 ft. lbs.)

The main man at S&W once took most North American game with the forerunner of the M-27. It does have distractors as a big game cartridge but it will work. I've used 44's and 45's most my hunting life but I'm thinking of going on a 357 tear...........Creeker

I have killed deer with the same gun. 1970-1975 best load I found were Rem 158 grn jacketed soft nose. Hit them in the chest and they would drop in 45-50 yards. I now use S&W 4" with 173 grn Keith hard cast with the same results.

From one Blackhawk shooter to another...

...I had a 6" blackhawk I used as my primary hunting gun for 20 years. In fact I bought my first centerfire rifle in all that time just this year.I hunted squirrel, rabbit, fox, coyote etc. with .38 wadcutters (less meat & pelt damage than .22 Stingers), and 145gr Winchester silvertip HPs for deer. If I'd gone after black bear, I'd have used the same load. I use Silvertips in every handgun I own, and they've never let me down. They're not the newest super-duper uber-killer sexy rounds that everyone seems to think you gotta have, but they do the job if you do yours, and they sure don't cost a buck a round. I like to shoot to much for that nonsense...

I've taken two deer with a 158 grain hard cast SWC, good kills with solid lung shots. I've worked up a good load using AA#9 and the 180 grain Hornady XTP I'm going to try this season. It's an ultra accurate load out to 100 yards and is topping 785 ft lbs out of a 6.5" Blackhawk.

BH 357

I know it`s hard to beleive but i shot a 175lp hog from 250 yards with my BH with a 2x scop on top.I worked up a load using a 180gr siolett sp with acc#9 cant rember how much but it was going 1325FPS and it went right thru the hog both lungs,

10yards

It looked ilke it was asleep when i walked up to it, I`ve never been much on trophie hunting or using hot mags rifles I hate distroying the game and the 357 dose very little dammage to the meat,I went hunting with the BH that year mostly because most of the hunters i was booking hunts for said it couldn`t be done and that the 357 was too small,Well i got to tell ya i killed more hogs with my 38spc than anything else from 5 to 40 yards it worked great but shot placement was very important otherwise you be running.
