I HAVE A WINCHESTER MODEL 70 PRE 64 IN 257 ROBERTS THAT THE STOCK HAS BEEN TRIMMED DOWN THE REST OF THE GUN IS IN APPROX 90%-MY QUESTION IS SHOULD I SELL IT & BUY SOMETHING NEW AS I HAVE A REMINGTON 722 THAT I CUSTOMIZED INTO A 250 SAVAGE A.I. SO I ALREADY HAVE 25 CALIBER, OR SHOULD I JUST FIND A PRE 64 BARREL IN 270 OR 3006 AND HAVE IT REBARRELED-WHICH IS WHAT I AM MOST LIKELY TO DO AS I LIKE HUNTING WITH OLDER BOLT ACTIONS & I GOT THIS ONE FOR A GOOD PRICE-ANY IDEAS WOULD HELP

THANKS

Please don't use all capital letters; it's the same as shouting. And regular style with capital letters at the start of a sentence with lower-case afterwards is much easier to read. Thanx. :)

"...trimmed down...": Does the stock, as is, fit you? (You can always add a longer butt pad, if need be.)

Nothing wrong with re-barrelling if you keep the original barrel in the event you decide to sell, later on. If you go with the .30-'06, I suggest that you get a 24" barrel. If you want a shorter barrel, go with the .308.

Seems to me that if you're happy with your .250 Savage AI, the .270 wouldn't particularly add anything to your capabilities.

Thanks for the reply, sorry about the letter caps, by trimmed down on the stock I mean that the bulk has been sanded down, the checkering is gone and the original steel butt plate no longer fits, as is the stock fits me great, I just meant that for being original it has lost it's value, and your are right about the caliber-it will be an 3006.

couldn't tell ya what you should do, but... if you decide to sell, my youngest daughter needs that exact rifle. my oldest daughter has a pre-64 fwt in 308 win, and my youngest is much more petite, and i think a 257 roberts in a pre-64 would be right... so, if you wanna sell, i'd love a crack at it.

Swatguy,

I hunt with two pre 64' Model 70 rifles and shoot two other pre 64' Model 70 rifles in high power rifle competition. My hunting rifles are a 30.06 and a 300
Weatherby that originally started out as a 300 (H & H) magnum. The orginal owner rechambered it and I still don't know why.

If you love older bolt actions and particuliarly the pre 64', why not just buy another stock or have a custom stock made. If I am not mistaken, the 257 Roberts is a fairly rare chambering for the pre 64'.

I know that finding a pre 64' stock is not all that easy, but I have seen several on ebay. Remember, if it ain't broke....

Anyway, what a great problem to have.
