I need some advice and I don’t know of a better place to get it than THR. I’m working with a guy to buy a collection of Ruger No. 1s, and through that conversation he mentioned that he has a group of five Pre-64 Winchester M70s that he would sell. There’s a couple of 270 Wins and a 257 Roberts in that group. I honestly don’t know what the other two are chambered in as I’m working through a middle man. I’ll know this weekend what exactly he has. That said, the 257 Roberts was the one that instantly got my attention, so I started looking around on Gunbroker and holy crap! The cheapest Pre-64 in 257 Bob is north of $3K? I’ve read since then that the 257 Roberts is a rarer chambering in the Pre-64 M70s. Can any of you aficionados confirm this and give me an idea of what this rifle might be worth? I know we need more details like grade and condition, but the price he threw at me for all five rifles puts me into that 257 much cheaper than $3K. How hard is it to find a Pre-64 M70 in 257 Roberts is the only question I’ve got that can really be answered right now. Any info would be much appreciated.

The .257 Roberts is a scarce and desirable chambering in pre64 Winchester 70s. Because of the weird panic envioronment since 2020 the actual sales of such is way down :( ! Wanted and a high starting bid on percieved value is one thing, the actual sales is another. If a person wants to sell a .257 Roberts Pre 64 right now the penny start , no reserve is the only way they usually sell and I would suspect it would sell for around $1500+- in todays depressed tactical market. A decent .270 rifle of same are selling around $800 +- unless something special like new in box or supergrade or a little more for Featherweight. I recently sold a very nice and accurate .264 Featherweight 1961 for $1400 unscoped on a penny start auction where the other same rifles sat unbid on for $1700 and up. On a 1951 30-06 rifle in Feb I got $1100 from a penny start where others with a $900 start bid were unbid on. The Varmint and Target models sell much better usually.

Thanks, Gordon. That helps a lot. I think the seller is kinda high on some of his rifles. I honestly think the 257 is the only rifle that is priced to move.

FYI here is a good clean .270 with good scope ect. went 9 days with zero bids at $999 . NONE of other .270s with big bids got even one bid on Gunbroker !

There are currently three .257 Roberts wit $3000-3400 starting bids -LOL, been there for a long time with zero bids ! Time for reality. In Classic rifle collection , this period is known as " those in hell want icewater " time :(

I could get this 257 for $1200-$1300. I’m in the air about it. Almost think I’d rather add another Ruger No. 1.

If it's clean I'd go for it, the 257 is nice, plus maybe a good bargaining chip for that dream no1 you may run into some day. that 270 I recently picked up I've seen a identical rifle not as nice as mine and a cheaper weaver scope sell for $1400 on gb a week after I got mine. Feel lucky I got it for just over $600 otd.

If you could get the .257 for $1200 that would be a good deal. There are other expenses with buying on line you won't have, plus visual inspection.

I’m buying three No. 1s from him without haggling him on his price at all. I’m hoping I can get him a little under $1200 on that rifle, but we’ll see. He doesn’t have to sell them and he knows it. Kinda torn between haggling him down a bit on that M70 or trying to pick up a fourth No. 1 from him and maybe getting a better price on the No. 1s.

If you’re buying more than one rifle then give him a packaged price for the whole thing. Easier to get a reduced price off of a bigger number.

That’s how they were priced to me. $6500 for 5 rifles which I think is too high and
I don’t have any desire to own any of them besides the 257. It would take months to flip the other four in my area. Going rate around here seems to be $1000 for good condition Pre-64 M70s.

When will you get to put your eyes on them?
I honestly don’t suppose I will. I agreed to buy six No. 1s this morning after seeing what he had. Lots of hard to find No. 1s. If you have some interest in the M70s, I’ll try to get some more info on them. Just remember that I am going through a middle man and communication is slow. Also, my middle man is a solid dude, but I swear my 11 year old takes better pictures. I think he used a microwave to get pictures of the No. 1s he sent me last night,

Shoot that man
Lol
He‘a been my go-to guy for finding No. 1s locally. My wife might shoot him, but I won’t. I’m picking up six of the rifles pictured. He’s keeping three and that leaves two that I’m going to help him sell. I’ll post some pictures when I pick them up on Monday. All of them are hard to find and most are new in the box. I hit the jackpot. Prices were very fair too.

The one in the middle with the black forend looks real nice to. I wish I could find a 7x57 but know I'll never have The money lol.

That one is an odd duck, and that’s why I am buying it. First year of production, 4 digit serial number. Seller swears that’s how it left the Ruger factory. I wish it was chambered in something other than 22-250, but I still wasn’t letting it get away.
