I find it very easy to tell them apart. Like I said again, take a pre and a post and shake them. Its extremely easy to tell the rattle trap post 64's from the pre-64s and I am not a specialist.

I figure the post 64's make so much noise that it is like you are broadcasting to the deer that you are coming.

I have to say that my post-64 Model 94, which I bought in 1964 is very difficult to tell from my Dad's Model 94. It's a solid rifle, which functions and shoots very well.

You may have gotten one that was made in '63 just before the transition. Look at a '65 94.

I just picked up another early 50's 94 today. Even my dealer commented it was in great/near perfect shape. Anyway, it is tight, really tight, does not rattle, the action is very precise, not hard, just you have to move it with authority and all of the levers work very cleanly with a snap.

I looked at a 357 big bore a few weeks back and it rattled, sounded hollow and had poor fit and finish. I immediately went back to the pre-64's and said never again.
