Is ignoring the sign a crime?

Yes, if someone notices and reports it. The signs carry force of law in Illinois.

If you decide to ignore it, you're betting that A) you won't be noticed and B) if you ARE noticed, the person who did so will give you a polite warning instead of quietly calling the police.
