A pile of spent caps. The shine is moisture drawn from the air. Humid at the range this morning. Powder blow back or is the priming mixture hygroscopic as well as the powder residue.

I like your photo. Put a black frame and a wide white mat around it and see how many folks can see the deep meaning expressed within. There are stories to be found between each and every one of the spent caps.

Malachi, I like your idea. It would be a blast to take it to a college art appreciation class and get a video of some of the comments.

Guys feel free to use as you please.

By the time I packed up, policed my shooting area and picked up the little pile of caps for disposal they had become quite wet. Had they been lying on a hard surface water would have pooled around them.

I posted as I started wondering about folks who fire caps to clear nipples then put the gun away. Then after realized it was probably more powder fouling than primer residue. Modern primers are none corrosive are modern caps ?

...Modern primers are none corrosive are modern caps ?

When I was a lot younger and got my first muzleloading rifle and took it to the range an old (knowledgeable) guy there taught me to fire off a cap first and watch for the blast on the ground to prove the nipple was clear before loading. Back then I always did that before loading and after several years of hunting when the rifle stayed fouled by a cap or two while remaining unfired for a few days to the whole season I never saw any evidence of any corrosion from the caps.

Prior to a relay starting a N-SSA events, the command "...snap caps..." is given to ensure shooters have clear flash channels.

Only one thing draws more 'TheButForTheGraceOfGod" hoots & holler comments than the once-in-a-while
" BOOM!!! " of a mistakenly left-loaded rifle, . . . .and a plume of smoke going down range....

...and that a " BOOM !!! " with a large smoking hole in the ground ahead of the shooters' feet.

You do know the moral to this story . . . . ;)
(Always snap that 1st cap pointed downrange)
