So, you wake up tomorrow morning, turn on the news to find out sales of new handguns are about to be banned. So, you run down to the local gun store to pick up the ultimate sub-compact semi-auto knowing full well this will probably be the last gun you can ever buy, and it has to last you the rest of your life.

The question is, what model gun, and what caliber do you put your faith in knowing that is has to last you a lifetime, and has to be in the sub-compact size range so you can eaisly conceal it?

Do you consider things like caliber .vs how many rounds you can carry, popularity of the gun (making it easier to find parts 10 yrs down the road), reliability of steel frame .vs polymer frame, etc.

Let's here your choices for the last semi-auto handgun you'll ever buy?

Already got it,but in the spirit of this thread, if I could only have one pistol it would be a 4" 629 - pre lock.

I posted a poll with a variation of this question a while back. My poll only addressed caliber, but here it is...

Personally, I would go with a .357 because that gives you two types of ammo. As an alternative, I would pick my favorite, most reliable semi-auto that I already own (currenlty an .40 XD) and buy a 2nd just like so I could share parts if needed.

It probably wouldn't be an autoloader.
Word...

Given the question as stated, and the situation the question implies, I would probably buy a Ruger SP101 in .357.

(And Lee casting stuff, and all the primers (especially primers) and powder I can. A pound of Bullseye is good for thousands of rounds of .38 Special.)

I would be a good wittle citizen of the State and not run down to the gun store and buy a new gun.

Oh no. The State is twying to pro-tect me, I must not be bad.
Only the po-lice and mil-i-tary people must have guns.

Excuse me, I need to see which cardboard box that furniture polish came in has that OLDer Gov't Model of 1911 the cockroaches must have drug in from somewhere and put in there back in 1972...

I wouldn't buy another gun.

I wouldn't buy another handgun. I actually have enough handguns to last the rest of this lifetime (don't tell the bride that, though), and I'd be unwilling to pay the prices likely to be asked.

But man, I would be carting out all of the handgun ammo in each store I could get to before closing. That, and enough PVC pipe and fittings to bury enough for three lifetimes. Better yet, I'd buy about three burial vaults and rent a backhoe for an afternoon. Lessee, 6.5'X2.5'X3'=48.75 cu. ft. X 3=146.25 cu. ft. of ammo in waterproof, leaktight containers. Yep, that oughta do it.

4" 686, a pile of ammo, and a tank of gas to get down to VA to join up with the VCDL, NRA and probably a few THR's for the LARGEST PROTEST THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN

I would buy a Glock 19 and a Glock 26 and Glock 27 and Glock 35, some kind of 1911, a couple Sigs and a couple of Smith and Wesson or Ruger revolvers.

That is if I wasn't a poor college student.

This Would Be Called The High Road Of The Outlaws!

1. Reloader is set up - check! - wait the reloader is always set up!

2. Forget the gun shop!

3. Meet up with alucard0822!

and in fairness to the question...

I have no need to go to gun shop under this circumstance.
I would want and have the following calibers....22 .223 30.06 .308 rifles and more
.22 .380 9mm .45 pistols and more

One gun only... hard choice... but I would probaly go with my .45 or 9mm both have .22 conversion kits! and I would lean more to the .45 maybe? In terms of ammo I would probably feel better with the 9mm /.22 setup it would probably do the job! I choose the 9mm/.22 but I still want a rifle!

I would buy another SA 40xd. I can tell you what I wouldn't buy also... the sp101 in .38 my wife has. That thing is the most inaccurate pos I have ever shot.

yea def 1911 of original design. Very limited amount of parts that are all steel, as long as they are protected it will last far longer than anything else in my opinion.

A 4" or 6" S&W 686+ since I reload for .357 and .38. I'd have a good supply of ammo.

or

A Glock 19. 9mm is easy to come by, the 19 is a good blend of practical size, capacity, and it's rugged.

It probably wouldn't be an autoloader.

True, a revolver would be the most durable choice, but you have to consider capacity in the equation, and 5 shots from a .38 is pretty limiting even with a pocket full of speed loaders.

I was holding off my opinion until some others posted.

I'm tossed up between the Glock 26/27 and the HK P2000SK in either 9 or 40. Both light, both well made, both with decent capacity.

I tend to lean a little more toward the glock even though I like the HK better only because the glock 26/27 starts off as a 10/9 round sub-compact (easy to conceal) but accept all the way up to 33 rd mags (easy to add capacity when conceal isn't a concern). The HK starts off at the same 10/9 rounds but maxes out at 13/12 rounds respectively.

I've already filled my niches.
I don't know if sub-compact is what I'd need.
But:
Colt Cobra
Kahr P45
Bull Dog from original Charter Arms, after extensive checking
S&W 696 (or the variations of)
