IF you HAD TO choose one of these rifles as your one and only home defense / CQB / STHF rifle, AND IF the price of the gun, price of all ammo and accessories were exactly the same, and parts availability etc. were exactly the same, which would you choose:

1. FN P90, 5.7x28mm

2. AR15 in 9x19mm

?? Go!

P90, higher capacity, lighter, smaller, and doesn't give up much in ft/lbs to the 9mm. I guess the larger bullet would be a big advantage, but i would still take the P90....

The 9mm AR, it is too big a platform for the cartridge, if it was a MP5 or UZI, it may be different...

USSR, You can answer a different question, but ONLY after you've answered my question.

So like gvnwst did, after you answer the original question, everyone tell us "Would your answer, or would it not, be different if it was a DIFFERENT pistol caliber carbine?" Thanks.

the FN p90. I dont like pistol caliber rifles. but thats just me. except the tommy gun. I think I would like that(never shot one)

PS90. It has the advantage of a flatter trajectory and the weapon was designed for that cartridge. I've seen way too many 9mm AR variants fail.

Since I'm not made of money and I wanted/needed a pistol caliber carbine to shoot some local matches, I bought a Vector semi-auto Uzi. Well made, reliable once I found the right ammo, adn built like a bricksmallhouse. I get 4MOA accuracy out of tit and have used it for matches out to 200 yards. Original, NIW, IMI mags are still cheap for them too, although since Vector has ceased production the price has gone up. BSW

Given the choice, I'd pay someone else the $$$ to not shoot me.
No sense spending money on CQB stuff because you'll probably just die anyhow.

If you positively must do the CQB thing, consider an SKS and some body armor with the money you've saved.

3. 870 12 gauge

Of the choicese you list, the AR-15 in 9mm because I have gobs of ammo for my G19's and Kahr already.
But I'd probably leave the AR in the safe and grab the G19 anyway if that's the only rifle I had.

9mm AR it has a much wider selection of ammo. Plus since mine takes Glock mags they're cheap and easy to find.

9mm AR. Ammo's more plentiful.

As much as i like FN, for home deffence I'd take the 9mm AR15.

The whole concept behind the millitary P90 is high rate of fire, high capacity, acurate submachine gun, capable to defeat body armor.
The civilian version is a semi and most thugs that would try to get in your home in the midle of the night don't run around in body armor. You are way safer with a 9mm carabine.
Also in most home invasion type scenarios, the acuracy of a 9mm carabine is good enough. When you look at most european 9mm SMG's from WW2 they were all acurate enough up to 100m. Within 10-20 yards is hard to miss with a carabine type/lenght weapon.

This answers your question. For home deffence I would take a shotgun over them any day.

Neither are very awesome options, but I'd rather take the AR in 9mm. I am far more comfortable with both the round and the platform.

If that one type of ammo was available in the 5.7 that is currently "limited", then I'd pick that.

Otherwise, the 9mm AR variant.
