if you are A handgun guy and shoot them well your home defence needs have already been met. I would go with the Ruger Scout as it is A general purpous rifle you can use for most anything A rifle is used for. .308 is A great hunting round and commonly available. But I do like the Scout rifle concept. jmho.
Why the bolt for hunting? I have been checking out the American Rifle and it sounds great for the price. If I get a bolt action, that might be the one. But I am seriously leaning toward the Mini 30. I think that cartridge makes sense. I would reload, as I currently reload handgun ammo.
I need to find the guns now. I have not seen any of the three in the wild.
Thanks for the great advise I am trying to find Mini 30s, Scout Rifles and Americans. There is not a single one within 100 miles of Cincinnati. I am going in expensive because I believe most of my money will continue to go towards handguns, namely upgrading trigger and hammer on my CZ, ammo supplies for Idpa and I know I will need a good scope. I may do .308 in American if I find one. If a scout rifle pops up, hmm we will see if I can pull the trigger for the extra money.
You really can't go wrong with the mini's, there is so much out on the market for them. For hunting I think the M77's are the better choice if you are going for deer. I just picked up a Gunsite Scout Rifle and mounted a 3x9 Redfield scope in the traditional position Sub MOA @ 100yrds out of the box with Federal match ammo.
