I didn't find out about this until a couple of hours ago, but one of my classmates has been murdered. http://sltrib.com/search/ci_3518687
Raechale was working at a "youth's home" where there came a call for support. Raechale, as well as another social worker, responded. Raechale arrived, but the other worker (a man), was stuck in traffic. Raechale (for reasons yet unknown to me) entered the home to try to calm the boy in "crisis." The kid raped her, and then stabbed her many times. He then stole her car and in the course of speeding away, managed to ram a house. The owner came out and the cretin started spilling his story.
I have known this girl since I was in gradeschool, where she, her sister, and I were friends. We also attended school together through High School (she graduated the year after I did). I hadn't seen her for about a year now...
I was incredibly shocked at first, but now I'm both saddened and incredibly angry.
I guess this serves as a very rude reminder to be prepared. You hear about this stuff every day, but when it hits closer to home, you truly realize how important self-defense is. I deeply wish (somehow) that
Raechale could have had a fighting chance with a good sidearm. Not knowing the whole situation, that may be an unreasonable wish, but I can't help but think it.
It also reminds me that I need to practice and train more. I now commit to do so in the memory of my friend,
Raechale Elton.
She was a very charming and beautiful girl.
