I'm stepping up to a .45for range use and IDPA.I've owned only one pistol for the past 8 years,a Sig P228.I love it,accurate,no failures of any kind.Iv'e always wanted a 1911 because they are beautiful guns and i can shoot them very accurately but they just don't jive with me as far as they feel awkward.Maybe it's just because all ive shot are Sigs and i'll get used to the 1911 grip. But everytime i decide i'll get the 1911 I make the mistake of fondling my Sig and the 1911 is replaced instantly with visions of a P220ST.What to do,I hear the P220ST does not meet weight requirements for IDPA but i'm more familiar with the Sig action and infinitely more comfortable with it.I would be training with the same weapon type I would carry. But the 1911 is very accurate, customizable to a greater degree, abit flatter for easier concealment,IDPA legal and just pretty as hell.So should I
A. Get the P220ST
B. Get a "loaded" 1911
C. Get a P220ST and a cheapie RIA 1911
D. Get a CPO/used P220 standard model and a Mil-Spec 1911

Out of the box the P229 or P220ST will be more accurate than a Springfield Loaded model. At least that's been my experience with my P220, P220ST and two Loaded models.

These are usually the type threads that I reply w/ "GET BOTH!" WHY? Well, you've already grown accustomed to the manual of arms for the SIG so the 220 will be a natural progression for you OTOH, everyone needs a 1911 in their collection so you need that SA as well. If it were me, I'd get the one I can get the better deal on 1st and get the other down the road :D
Good luck

I'd go for the Springfield Loaded since I slightly prefer the 1911 platform to the SIG, BUT... the P220ST is not trailing far behind

Both are great, and I agree with 10 Ring, get both. Either way you really cant go wrong. But if I had to choose I would go for the 1911.

I prefer SIG's over the 1911 personally. The Springfield loaded models that I've had the chance to shoot ran fine. I do agree that the P220ST will be slightly better from the box, and will most likely have less potential for trouble down the road. Both companies are good to deal with if you would have a problem though. From your choices, I'd run with the Standard P220 and a Mil-Spec 1911 myself. Best of both worlds there.

definitley buy sig 220

I'd say buy the the 220 cuz as you know the name has reliability stamped all over it and you can find a used one for around 600 to 450 as I just sold my sig220 to a friend of mine for 450 and I regret selling it but if you want a really nice sig 220 sport with the compensater on the end here's a guy selling some http://www.patelsrepair.com/ check it out as these are some hard guns to come by and not made anymore but some real sweet shooters and the 220 he has in in the stainless.

I don't own a P220ST. But I do own 2 regular 220's and a couple of Mil-Specs. Weight might be something to consider since you mentioned that you would also be using the new pistol to carry:

P220 = 30 oz.
Mil-Spec = 36 oz.
P220ST = 42 oz.

The ST is a wonderful pistol. But it is hefty. Personally, I'd go with a regular P220 'cause it'll handle closer to the 228 (also own one) AND a Mil-Spec. Mil-Specs are plenty accurate OOTB and are IMHO one of the best values in 1911's out there today. If you made me choose one or the other though, I'd go with the Sig.

The P220, any 220, is simply a fantastic firearm. I prefer the P220ST, but rarely use it as a carry weapon as it is very hefty.

If it were my money I would be all over the P220.

Mad - I suggest you try your current Sig in competition, see how the trigger and
controls work for you in that environment. My son shoots IDPA, bowling pins and
Speed Steel at a local level. He has tried most everything out there, he works in
a gunstore, and the 1911's work best for him. He used a 220 for a couple of
months but couldn't get the trigger transition to work right for him.

Also he is a south paw and that doesn't help with some "normal" contols. :(

So try what you have and see how it goes before putting major bucks in.

I had the same dilema. I got the 220 ST Stock in Dec., then decided I couldn't live without the 1911 and got the SA Black Stainless Target in January. The Sig is more accurate out of the box. The SA is more fun to work on and upgrade.

C. Get a P220ST and a cheapie RIA 1911

Go for it, quantity has a quality of its very own :)

I think the RIA is a very good way to get your feet wet with the 1911 without spending a ton of money.

Only thing I have bad to say about the RIA is the low profile GI sights are really hard to use with my old eyeballs, but if you are young, they work fine. With my reading glasses, my RIA shot POA/POI, but I bought it to put on a J-Point red dot optic which has worked out wonderfully.

If you are older and need better sights, I'd wait for some new RIA models comming out this year that'll have Novak's sights. I've got the Armscor label model of this gun and the extra $50 gets lots of creature comforts and I can use the Novak's sights with my unaided vision.

I was recently faced with a similar decision and I bought the Sig P220. I am a sucker for a slick DA/SA with a great reputation for reliability and accuracy. I didn't go for the stainless though, too matte for my taste.

D. but i did it in reverse. i got my mil spec when you had to find a good pistolsmith to customize it. still have it still like it. several years later, i purchased an ANIB 220 bitone. fantastic firearm. it shoots as well as my 1911, and i'm more comfortable with the platform. if i could only keep one, it would be the sig 220

I've got both now. The 1911 might be slightly easier to shoot fast. The P220 is lighter, and slightly more accurate. It's a hard decision. You're going to have both eventually. Just have to decide which comes first.

I've got the SA Full Size Custom Loaded (PI9132L). Don't have a sig so can't compare but can say that the SA is an excellent handgun, feels good, shoots good, looks good.

Another vote for the loaded but I am obviously biased because 1) I own a Loaded in Stainless and 2) If I strayed from the 1911 platform it would be to a Glock (own one of those too).

Skip the P220ST,

Buy a good 1911, there is a reason the military used them for 100 years and the elite FBI SWAT/HRT, SOCOM, and other elite military and police units use 1911s as their sidearm.

ITs the same reason you see 1911's at the top levels of all competitions from bullseye pistol to the action shooting sports.

They are ergonomic, have the best trigger, the best accuracy, and incredible durability. In addition you can change parts on the gun to tailor it to fit your hand, something you cant do on a P220ST.

I recently bought a P220ST, you can read about my wonderful experiences with it and SIG customer service if you search this forum.

I am keeping my P220ST and maybe I will warm up to it eventually, it certainly has potential, But its no 1911, not even close.

Let us know what you choose. Good luck

I know that you said you were interested in a .45, but have you considered an X-Five Competition in .40?
It is a step up in price but talk about some nice hardware!

Of course, you could always try to find a P220 LANGDON. That would be my choice.

I love my Sig P220ST, sure it's a little heavier then most...but the balance is great and it fires wonderful.

Get the 1911.
My P220ST requires special $50 magazines in order to freely eject a partial spent magazine. My SW1911 ejects my $22 Wilson 47Ds just fine.
My P220ST can't shoot a chambered round with a full mag under it without ejecting the magazine. Hand cycling the slide on a full magazine is right out. My SW1911 does not have that problem.
I shoot with a thumbs-high grip and must be dilligently conscious of my thumb in relation to the slide catch of a P220ST, but the 1911 works out fine.
On both guns I occassionally have FTRTB issues. Once every 300-500 rounds. Don't know if it's the ammo (always Blazer Al).

That being said, the DA and SA trigger press of the P220ST is great right from the factory. :)

Get a springfield theyre accurate and as reliable as you need it to be if you dont like it ill buy it from you for what you paid for it .You cant go wrong with a springfield in my opinion, but ive never owned a sig:cool:
