I want, No...daresay I NEED a .45

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for a .45. While I will be the first to agree that there is no Magic Bullet, there is just something about that big ol' hole at the end of the muzzle that I find very intimidating. Not that I would volunteer to be a test subject in an experiment to verify the terminal effects of a .25 or a .32(or a .22). I just want a .45.

When the time is right, and the situation presents itself, I will be getting rid of my H&K USPf .40 S&W, and getting some kind of .45.

I have done some fondling and some shooting, and have decided that I need to get something that is single stack, preferebly DA/SA, but I am flexible. My wife handled a Commander Size 1911 at a rental range, and didn't like the thumb guard thingy(who's that for a techinical term...sometimes I think I shouldn't be allowed to own a gun ). Or, the grip safety. So...1911's are kind of out of the equation.

At this point the guns on my list are as follows: Beretta Cougar, Ruger P97, Glock 36(can't stand the feel of the 30), and the SIG P220. I am sure there are a bunch more out there. No shop around me really carries S&W. Haven't seen a whole lot of positive stuff about Taurus .45's either.

This firearm would be mostly for home defence, and not carried very often, so weight is no issue. I am hoping to keep it under $600, but can stretch it to the $800 range is the Sig really is the best option out there. It just means I will have to wait longer for my next gun.

All input would be greatly appretiated.

Other than caliber, what didn't you like about your USP 40? I really like my USP 45 & Expert 45 and I'm contemplating the addition of a UPc 45 to round things out

Caliber wasn't the problem with my H&K, it was fit. As I detailed in another thread(wishes he knew how to link to another thread ) Once I started handling other guns, I realized that the USPf didn't fit me at all...I had to shift my grip to reach the trigger in it's DA position, and for my wife it was dang-near impossible.

I suppose I should have added a USPc to my list...I've heard the fit the hand different. Other than feel, I am very happy with my H&K.

Do you mean the thumb rest that doubles as a safety?

I mean the top part of the back of the grip, that keeps your hand low enough to prevent it from getting bitten...

Sounds like the Sig 220 is what you need. However, you should check out the CZ 97B first, especially if you want to save some money. You might also want to consider an S&W 625 revolver.

Sounds like a 1911 is out of the question for your wife....buy her a Ruger, $350-400, and take the remaining $400 and put it towards a quality 1911 for yourself..

I doubt a Sig 220 would fit her hands either, although they are a great gun.

You'll have a hard time getting a gun that will perfectly fit your wife and yourself.

The SIG-Sauer P-220 is certainly a possibility, but there still are quality single-stack .45ACP's out there which are cheaper (eg. Ruger, CZ).

I just picked up a Ruger P97.
From what I've read, they will feed anything, are very accurate, and are rugged, durable, and reliable.
American made, with outstanding customer service.
About $380 out the door.
What's not to like?

I added the Houge grip sleeve to mine.
I've only shot about 130rds so far, but I'm very pleased at this point.

Oh, and to save somebody else the trouble:
Get a CZ!

There are a couple options to not liking the grip safety. One is obvious and doesn't need mentioning. The other is buying a Ballester Molina. Not exact copies of the 1911/1911A1 but pretty gosh darn close. Parts don't interchange but generally aren't an issue.

They're ugly but the work. Cheap too! I've seen them for $190 in 80% condition and $290 for 100% refinished pieces.

I'd cast my vote in favor of the SIG P220. A pretty penny, to be sure, but the incomparable 220 (standard alloy frame, not the ST) will provide years of exemplary service and accuracy. Within the Pantheon of DA/SA forty-fives, the SIG stands out as the most consistently accurate and reliable weapon available! (The usual IMHO and YMMV modifiers apply ).

And yes, Ala Dan paid me to post this...

But seriously, you can't go wrong with the SIG.
