I am in the market for a new 9mm. I like Glocks. However, I'm looking for something a bit different. I have narrowed my choices to the FNH FNS or, Walther PPQ. The thing I like about the FN is the fact that, it comes with factory night sights. Also, it's a positive that it's made in the US.

However, from what I hear, it is almost impossible to find extra magazines. This is because, FN is concentrating on law enforcement first. the other drawback I see, is the fact that aftermarket support for FN handguns has been quite limited.
one thing that drew me to both pistols was the trigger. Every review I've read said that one of the best features was the trigger. So far I'm leaning towards the Walther. Any thoughts would be appreciated. To clarify, this will be used for the range, home defense and occasional carry.

I have two FN pistols, the fnp45 and the Five-seveN (just bought the 5-7 yesterday) and I cant express enough how happy I am with the pistols. The fnp45 is hands down my favorite pistol (Five-seveN might take that spot once I get to shoot it tho) and highly recommend trying the FNS out, I think you'll fall in love. And I used to be a die hard glock guy (own 9 of them) and have also owned or currently own s&w MP pistols, Sigs and rugers. All polymer pistols. I'm going to buy a FNX-45 compact as soon as they come out so i can use it for CC. Sorry bout all the rambling lol, I say go for the FNS.

Oh I forgot to mention that FN sells each gun with 3 magazines so unless you need alot of mags for some reason I wouldn't worry about the price/availability too much.

You really need to try out both to see for yourself. I have the Walther PPQ and just love it. The grip, trigger, and ergos are perfect for me. To me the FNs do not compare in either grip or trigger. I was astonished how well I could shoot the PPQ it from the very first magazine and MANY other report the same experience. It also comes with 3 backstraps and does NOT have a manual safety. I don't want a manual safety on any of my non 1911 pistols.

No the PPQ it is not made in the USA - it is made and proofed in Germany where some of the finest firearms in the world are made. Not sure why you want USA made pistol.

The accuracy of the Walther PPQ is stunning also especially for a relatively short barrel.

Check out this video is you are interested in seeing the kind of accuracky this shooter got at 25 yards with his new PPQ.

or this shortened video of PPQ only

If you have not seen them yet be sure to check out Hitchcok45 videos on the PPQ as he two of them.

This is the THIRD magazine I put through my PPQ at 75 feet offhand. I don'y usually shoot at 25 yards because of my eyesight but I just wanted to see what I could do with my PPQ at 25 yards.

I have an FNP45, awesome gun. I think an FN series 9mm would be just as good. I am eying a Walther PPQ in 9mm and I also recommend the Beretta Px4storm. I also have that gun and it shoots terrific...

Since you like Glocks I'd go with the PPQ its trigger is more like a Glock the FN are DA/SA or cocked and locked depending on the model options you buy.

FN gouges on spare mags almost as bad as does HK.

David E -- 3 magazines isn't even bare minimum for a "serious" gun.

True. But this is not a serious gun. It is at best a backup gun, the kind you would wear in a holster on your ankle, and more likely a mere plaything. Ergo 1 magazine would be more than plenty for it, and the others are just extras in case you lose the first one.

Walthers are better made.

Glocks are cheap.

Better to have many mags and not need them, than to need em and be without. Magazine prices would be somewhat of a factor for me, but not a deal breaker. I say Walther.

He said it would be for "range use" (not serious), "home defense and carry." (both very serious)

6 mags is a bare minimum, 12 is better.

Seriously?! Where in the Name of Civil Unrest do you live? Mogadishu, Somalia? Are you fighting off hordes of ravening Vikings that you feel the need for so much firepower, to be "serious" about home or personal defense?

Re the OP: I'm partial to Walthers, and the ergos are fantastic. My P99 9mm is the most naturally shooting handgun I've picked up and fired (my P99 40S&W is a slightly different matter  but that's me, not the gun)

Seriously, actual occurances of a civilian firefight where a mag swap is utilized or even needed are almost non existant. If you have 15 round magazines and still feel the need to carry six of them...well perhaps a shooting course would be a better investment than more magazines.

PPQ!
I’ve had one since JAN, bought it as a companion to my PPS and possibly to use in IDPA for ESP and I bought a second one this month. I put 1400 flawless rounds through the first, and another 400 through the second.

I’m flat out impressed with the PPQ, the ergonomics are fantastic, and the trigger is the closest thing I’ve felt on a polymer gun to a 1911. It’s nothing short of superb, and feels like it was made to be staged prior to let off. I’ve let my friends try it, and not one hasn’t liked it, with all commenting on the trigger, and they’re a pretty experienced bunch. The sights are perfectly adequate for combat sights, and I can even shoot with them without my glasses, there’s that much daylight around the front blade.

The mag release takes some getting used to, which is why I bought the PPQ so it would make reloads with the PPS easier. Once you do get used to it, IMHO it’s superior to a button type. The PPQ does recoil a little more than some others, I believe this is due to a slightly higher bore axis, and the fact it’s a pretty light pistol. It isn’t a major issue, but it’s noticeable when comparing to other pistols in the same category. Since it’s based on the P99, it’s also got a decent track record going for it.

For about $500 the gun is a fantastic pistol.

Magazines are costly, but I don’t plan on buying 12. I do use the Magnum Research Mags which at about $30 are pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the detailed feedback Chuck! I'm leaning towards the PPQ. However, I hope aftermarket support gets better. I'm really hoping they come out with a Serpa for it.

My only qualm with the Walther (which I voted for) is that it looks eerily like a "classy" Glock. Which, as we know, is an oxymoron. :)

the PPQ is sexy. I don't care what anyone says, to me, it's hot. I want one. It appears to be everything that a Glock is, except actually ALSO good looking.

Buy one, run about 4 thousand rounds through it, and then let us know how many ftf 's you had and in what shape the gun is in after 4,000.

If you answers are less than 5 ftf out of 4 thousands rds with commercial ammo, and the gun is still tight and working well, then by golly, it is a good looking glock and then I'll buy one too. :)
