In a recent conversation with a friend of mine, we were discussing our favorite carry guns. I told him I like my Smith model 10 snubby a lot, and carry it frequently. Right away he started in on all the reasons he thought I was undergunned. I should carry an auto, something with more capacity, something faster to reload, etc. Look, I feel just fine carrying my .38, and I know how to use it. So..... I'm gonna keep on carrying it. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

J-frame S&W 638 and KelTec P32 for me.
Even though both of the above are considered lightweight, they seem to make my pants drift toward the ground.
Perry Suspenders really help.

If you need more than six rounds you are a poor shot or in the wrong neighborhood. 6 million+ owners over 118 years speaks volumes about the quality and reliability of the Model 10. I feel the same as you about my five shot Model 640...confident in my equipment and ability.

Carry on and be safe.

This J frame M642 is my favorite carry gun, a 38 Special, five shot, no hammer to snag or safety to forget to flip. Yes only five rounds, but, it is a very reliable five rounds.

This J frame M638 is my second favorite carry gun, a 38 Special, no hammer to snag or safety to fumble.

And this was so cheap, I bought it. I have carried this in my vehicles and into hotel rooms. Never felt under armed, even though it is only a five shot 38 Special

If someone feels more secure carrying an autopistol, let them carry their autopistol. I don't feel less secure with a revolver because it has less firepower. I do feel secure with a revolver because the things are extremely reliable and will suffer neglect that will gum up an autopistol.

Nice revolvers!

I actually was issued a Model 10 (Square butt) 2" snub while in the Army and Reserves. I only qualified once with it on initial issue in Army , but later in reserves at Hunter Liggett had to qualify once a year and they cobbled up a revplver class with me and half a dozen ranger scout types : they rode 650 Kawasakis that were attatched to the skid on a helicopters and for some reason had 4" Ruger Security Sixes . I held my own against them with the 2" Model 10 marked US Property and carried in the issued Bucheimer 500 Shoulder rig . :) I reluctanly recently parted with the New in box sentimental replacement I owned 35 years as when I started carrying it I soon got tired of the 2+ pound loaded weight of it. If I want to carry a 28 .oz gun it would be a Hi Cap .45 acp of the same general package size of an M-10. An old M-10 -2 to about a 10-5 are my favorites :)

I think the statistics show it's rare for personal defense scenarios to involve more than 3 shots. The logic of the choice revolves around the tactical situation you are preparing yourself for. If it's the absolute worst case, an AR and a few extra mags might come in handy. Military and law enforcement agencies have fairly universally decided at one point or another the extra capacity autoloaders offer a decisive factor, but their tactical ambitions are a far cry from that of a private individual's.

I'm thinking one needs compare against single-stack 9mm in this case, so you would only pick up a round or two. I can conceal my 4" PPQ easily and have 16 rounds in the gun, but I'm a big guy and I wouldn't hesitate to carry even a 5-shot revolver out of fear of being underarmed. With an auto it's generally advised you carry an extra mag, not so much for the additional capacity but in case the one in the gun malfunctions. Recent autoloaders are generally amazingly reliable considering their complexity, but at times that complexity can itself be an issue. A quality revolver might be considered more reliable for those crucial first shots.

I carry five-shot revolvers often. If someone decides they're going to mug my big hillbilly self for the ten cents in my pocket, or carjack me for my $500 pickup truck, it will be enough for me to protect myself with. I don't feel that I need the kind of firepower that a LEO needs to have. If I suddenly stop posting, you'll know I was wrong. :)

Nothing wrong with a revolver as a CCW. I feel the revolver is a poor choice for LEOs with the threats they need to deal with today. My most carried gun is my S&W 66. Don't feel undergunned with it.

Six shot K frame snub will do fine... just keep alert and shoot strait.

Might want to try Buffalo Bore 158 gr LSWHPs! Stander pressure makes almost 900 fps from a 2 inch snub and the +P makes an honest 1000 fps from a 2 inch barrel.

Here is my S&W 64 I used as my CCW gun after CHL started here in Texas (it was my 2nd carry gun after a 640 Centennial.) I still have my old carry guns!

And that Speed Six ain't no slouch either!

I always find it interesting to see what folks feel comfortable with. I'm more than happy with a 5 shot snubbie or single stack subcompact, but I know of other guys that don't feel safe unless they have a full sized 9mm with an extra mag AND a LCP backup.

I quit carrying semi-Autos a few years back. I carry Two J-Frames every day. I would love to have a Modle 10 round but 2" for AIWB carry.

All my defensive handguns are revolvers. 5 and 6 bangers. Carry an LCR mostly. I do carry speed loading devices and practice reloads with snap caps however. I do believe in reserve ammo. But I'm a wheelgunner.
