Well, almost.

I was at the local pawn shop. Really, it is the best gun store around these parts and a nice store at that.

I'm checking out the selection of 100+ autos, looking for a new carry weapon. In walks this lady with two Kimber pistol cases and she mentions to the counter person that she is here to sell the two Kimbers and has alreday negotiated a price with the owner.

I couldn't help but ask to see what was in those cases. Enquiring minds need to know!

Turns out both are unfired and one is an Ultra Carry. Just what I am looking for and can find very few of. Lady lets me fondle the Ultra Carry while the counter help is doing the paper work.

Seems this wonderful wife had bought them for her husband and he didn't want them (I suspect they just needed the cash). Anyway, whilst lusting over this baby, the counter lady mentions the price the store is paying is $1600. For both! Yep, the shop is buying two brand new never fired in the box Kimbers for $800 each!

I offered to buy the Ultra Carry for $900 and was told "Sorry, we already have deal". So I ask about the new selling price: $1300 each.:cuss:

I may still cry.

Don't feel too bad, Steve. That's the "American way". With the gun market the way it is, they'll probably get it!

For yrs., I lusted after, & finally bought, a new Ruger 10/22 "Magna-Lite" by Magnum Research for the MSRP - $600+tax. I put a rail, rings, & 4-16x40 scope on it & shot maybe 30 rds. through it, to get "on paper". That was 2003. A couple of yrs. later I found myself needing some extra $$$, so I go to my favorite gun store to sell.....

The owner of the store happens to be in & offers me $200 for it & the 2 PB Butler Creek 25rd. mags I had thrown in to "sweeten the deal". I can't believe I need the cash this bad, but finally say "go ahead w/ the sale".

He picks up the rifle & says "ain't nothin special 'bout it, it's just a 10/22 w/a after market barrel." I say "Excuse me sir, but that's a Magnum Research rifle". He looks down @ it & faintly smirks as he writes out the check.

I left & have never been back to his store since. On the way out I threw away all of his business cards that I had been carrying in my wallet. In the past, I was so impressed w/ his store that I would hand out his business card whenever I bumped into someone looking for a nice firearm or ammunition. I felt like such a sucker.

Only a week prior, I had called that store to see if they would be interested in buying my rifle, & the owner had gone on & on about giving more for "good used guns", because he was selling "his" guns @ a higher asking price than the local pawn shops.

I'll go to a pawn shop (or sell here) if I ever need $$$ that bad again. :banghead:

I think I would have been sick to my stomach. Sorry to hear that. I am sure you will find what you are looking for.

The nature of business.

This sort of thing is very common in any retail sales situation. To stay in business the shop must pay less for the guns than the true value. The clerk of the store wants to be paid, there are costs such as rent and utilities that have to be covered.

This applies to any business selling used items. Think about the last time you traded in a car, I am willing to bet that the dealer did not put it back out on his lot at the price that you were given.

Now as to how people are treated, that is a whole different subject. In the case of the mentioned Ruger 10/22, the clerk should have held his opinion to himself. He may indeed feel about that gun in that way, but there is never any reason to denigrate a cherished item.

Should have offered to buy both for $900 each. She probably would have taken it. F*#$ pawn shops! They dick people over enough, so someone getting back at one would be pretty cool!

Don't feel so bad. There's another thread floating around here which asks what the most problematic gun is and Kimbers are at the top of the list.

"Or you could sell to me, and get 100 dollars more for what you are trying to get rid of."

"no thanks, I don't like money."

Yeah, but now it is a 1300 dollar problematic gun.

yea nobody wants to help ya these days thats for sure i probably would have flipped if that lady told me no like that i mean come on how dumb you gotta be not to accept 100 more than what a pawnshop will give you
as for the Magnum Research i would have walked out as soon as he said it was a ruger 10/22 with a bull barrel
i used to deal with a shop around here untill i realized how little the owners knew about the products they sold i have one very strict rule about being in sales
KNOW YOUR PRODUCT
thats it period if you dont then i wont do business with you (unless i already know the product myself in that case the salesperson becomes irrelevent)
that goes for both sellers and buyers

$900 for an Ultra Carry II??? lmao..

That's insane. I bought mine brand new from Sportsman's Warehouse right around Christmas for $750 + tax. They are still that price and easily available. I ended up changing my mind about keeping it and sold it *unfired* to a member here on THR for $725 shipped.

The only reason you would have to cry is if you got ripped off by paying $900 for an Ultra Carry. You should be glad you didn't buy it!
