Well I saw an ad in the paper about a 1928 M1 in 308. I got to think the M1's were not made until the 30's and in 30-06. He also said it was made be Springfield. Well I had to get more info on this one so I call the number and an older guy answers the phone. He said it was an M1 but not a Garand. I asked him if it was a semi-auto and he said yes. I asked him if it looked like a M1 Grand and he said yes. Well I told him I not to sell it I would get it but I would be a few hours before I get there.
Well I get there and it is a rough bolt action Russian model 28 military rifle :banghead:. I spoke to the old guy for a while about firearms and came to the conclusion he just did not know much about guns. He had some health problems and was selling some of his guns since he could not use them anymore. Well he had a couple of people call before I got there to buy it and he had told them it was sold.
I was not going to buy this rifle because it was not worth more than 125-150. He was asking double that. He had a Ruger Security Six in 357 mag. with a 2 1/2"- 3" barrel. It was in nice shape, but had a little bluing wear on the barrel. I would rate if about 95% because of the wear. Well after having the guy hold the rifle I felt I had to buy some thing so I give him 260 for it, but he was asking 300.00. I really did not know anything about it but figured it was worth 225-250 and it had a trigger as smooth as any Smith I have seen. Well it looks like it was worth about 200.00 book value.
Looking back I am a little sick, but I would have felt worst not buying anything. I think he was selling to pay for some medical bills. I am sure he was not being dishonest about the rifle. My wife was with me and she agreed we should have bought something from the guy. I have been wanting a 357 mag with a 3-4†barrel. I am sure the gun has not been shot much.

That is reasonable enough deal on a nice ruger. Hell, if it is in the shape you say it is in I would have bought it as well.

Thanks that makes me feel better to know that it is an acceptable price to someone else. I liked the way it felt in my and according to him it was a great shooter. I think if I would not have bought it or something from the guy I would not have been able to sleep tonight. Do not get me wrong he did not tell me a sob story but when you talk to people you can kind of sense things about them. With medical care and meds at the prices they are I feel he needed the money since I am positive he was on a fixed income.

My 2.75" Speed-Six has a wonderful trigger.

However, even though you did what you considered to be the right thing, I wouldn't feel bad about NOT buying a weapon that was misrepresented, even if the seller did so in ignorance.

I've got a 6" Security Six. They're great guns, shoot it and enjoy it. $260 was a decent price, that's about what they went for new.

You really didn't lose on that Security Six deal. Hold on to it and shoot the skunk out of it, they are durned near indestructible, accurate and smooth! A K frame Holster usually fit's. 2 3/4" is just right barrel length on that piece! :)

I have a 2 3/4" Ruger Six also. I don't know that I want any other wheelgun. Maybe a 3" Smith in .44 Spc or Magnum sometime.

Don't knock this gun, and don't feel sick about it either. These are decent guns for just about everything. But certainly not best an anything really. (Except the "run over it with an automobile and see if it still functions" test).

BTW: I think 3" is just perfect for an all round do everything well, but not best wheel gun. Great for carry, not too much sacrifice on velocity or accuracy even at long distances. Okay maybe 2 3/4" a little more than I like, but I can still get an 8" group out of it at 25 yards, no practice w/ it in years. Very handy for the home...

Keep it, it will grow on you.

The title to this thread makes me laugh.

Yea I wanted to make it a little humorous. :p

Thanks for the good comments I feel better about it now. I will report back once I shoot it.

I went and shot it tonight and it was dead on the money with no problems at all. I was surprised and how well it absorbed the recoil

You did okay, both as regards helping out an old couple and acquiring a pretty decent, practical gun in the process. I have picked up a few guns under similar circumstances and have never minded paying a few bucks more on principle...

I have a 97 year old father in declining health and deal with some other older people on a fairly regular basis. Many of us will be in the same situation as they are some day; we need to keep that in mind.

Good for you for seeing it for more than a financial transaction.

Yeah, I thought Old Stiffy was what you got with one of those new sex pills advertised on TV....

But that is a fine gun you got and I wouldn't feel bad. In fact, many people I know prefer that to the GP.

"... I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to find."

Same here. ;) I opened it with my finger hovering over the big red button.

ccw007 - Did the oldster say he was going to describe the rifle a little better to future prospects?
