Ok, So I went camping in Sullivan County PA last weekend. We werent in a campground and there was nobody around for miles. It was a helluva time. However, we always hear stories of bears and last year a bear came in and wrecked our site twice. We were closer to people that time, and they were feeding him. So, it was my g/f's family and myself. All of them hate guns but the father, and the mother wont let the father get one. So there we are in bear country and my girlfriends mom is freaking out about bears. She states how she hates guns and doesnt want them in her house or near her, but how she would feel much safer if she had one with her while camping. She then asked if I had one, which I didnt because I left it at home simply because I know she hates them and they probably wouldnt have taken me camping. Her fear of guns is unfounded. She found a logical use for one yet she still refuses to buy one or let her husband buy one. The only protection I had was a 26.5mm flare gun and a ka-bar. I offered to buy them a rifle and teach them how to use it, but they didnt bite. I said, at least just get a mosin nagant, you can leave it in the truck, not clean it and it will still show a bear whos boss. They declined. I guess the point I am trying to make is that, they found a need and a purpose for guns, yet they still will not take that step to be a gun owner. I am just dumbfounded at their beliefs.

Deep down that's how pretty much all antis feel. Instead of having guns, they want somebody else with a gun to come help them. It's really just an insecurity with themselves IMO.

You disarmed yourself, putting yourself and those around you in danger, because this silly woman doesn't like guns and so that you could go camping with your g/f?

NO guns permitted in state parks in PA. A gun is not a magic wand you have to know how to use it and have the proper mindset.Black bears are rarely dangerous .They can be a niusance when stupid people feed them.

it's not just guns....

I've had people asking me why I drive a gas-guzzling pickup and then ask me to help them move or haul firewood for them in the same breath :banghead:

But as the years go by I'm learning to just stay away from stupid people - it's easier on the nerves and you live longer that way :p

Let her go in the woods without a gun. That fixes all problems:

1) bear is fed
2) one less anti to worry about
3) you don't have a mother-in-law the sick your gf/wife against you

Overall, a nice deal.

I've checked over the last post pretty carefully, and I can't find any logical fallacies.

I think this is the solution to beat.

"Nice deal" for you maybe.

Won't somebody please think of the poor bear?!!

;)

I had a similar "We hate guns . . .can I borrow one -" experience a couple years ago in my neighborhood.

It was an unseasonably warm New Years Day and eveyone was out walking, enjoying the weather. It turns out that there had been a warm burglary around the corner the night before. Scummies had entered through the garage, robbed the place and stole a car while the occupants slept (fortunately, no one was hurt - they slept through the whole thing).

Needless to say, the story got around pretty fast, and it wasn't too long before one or our more bliss-ninney kind of neighbors who knew I had handguns sort of danced around it and then asked if he could borrow one "for you know, protection -". I asked if hed had any experience with firearms, and upon recieving an negative answer, I politely, but firmly declined. I did offer to show him the basics, take him shooting, get him hooked up with training at the NRA, etc. He never did take me up on it. Oh, well :banghead:

I don't know where the rest of you live but here in the PRC if you loan a gun to somebody who shoots another person without good cause then you can expect to be charged with a crime and face a nasty lawsuit.

Yup. Here in SoCal if one of my friends/neighbors brings up HD, I point them right at Turner's, who usually have one of the big 3 HD shotguns on sale for $300 or less. That plus ammo, range time and training equals not a lot of money for some decent insurance.

The only anti friend I haven't be able to convince, (She's anti, but not anti 2a, if that makes sense,) has stated an inability to take another's life. Good on her for knowing her own limitations, but I suspect if she was to become a mother her attitude about taking a life might change.

in response to one of the posters. I disarmed myself to an extent. We experienced black bears before and realize they are not nearly as dangerous as grizzlys. I had that 26.5mm flare gun which IMO could scare the bare away if shot in the air or at the bear. I am using this as an example because simply flashing high beams and honking the horn scared him away last time. I was not aware of the no guns in PA state parks rule, I will consider getting bear pepper spray for their family. And if the bear does eat the mom, at least her dad will buy a gun and he and I can go shooting. That would be ok by me.

DBMF, I think you've got this problem licked. Isn't it great the way solutions appear when folks kick ideas around like this? :D

"no guns in PA state parks."

this is not exactly true, there are several exceptions and conflicts of state law about this.

the state premtion(sic) law seems to give LTC holders the ok to carry there.... if caught the park police will ask you to leave and charge you with tresspass if you do not.

there are several exceptions in the park regs also.
gun cased in your vehicle seems to be ok.

open carry while dog training in certain areas is ok.

some state parks have areas that are open to hunting in the appropriate seasons. carry unloaded from the camp ground to the hunting areas is ok.

if you have an "oh ????" incident where you needed a gun for self defence and used it. pa law admits competing harms defence. in the unlikely event park police try charging you with anything.

+1

The same people that dont want you or I to own a shotgun have NO PROBLEM with the police being armed with any and every weapon they can find, regardless of application or justification*

*unlike private citizens, the police actually have to justify what they purchase because they arent buying it with their own money.
