I find it hard to resist certain rifles. The 98 Mauser... single-shot rifles in general and the Ruger #1 in particular... and the Remington Model 30.

The M30 was made 1921-1941 and the most interesting aspect is that it is built on a true magnum length action. So if you want to build a BIG rifle it will do as the starting point. It failed to compete with the Winchester Model 70 and I have read that only 22,000 were produced.

I currently own two of these. One is a plain Jane version that was drilled for scope mounts (they didn't come that way) and has ivory inserts in the stock. The other is a total custom big bore built on the 30S. The 30S was only offered 1930-32 and was a deluxe version. I had an absolutely pristine 30S that was stolen in 1985. I still mourn that one's loss.

So today I bagged one on Gunbroker. Despite not being really popular in the past they have become rather pricey lately so I was happy to get this one at the starting price that I thought was reasonable. It is not 100% original with a replacement sight and holes for a scope. I am thinking 300 H&H with a Mannlicher stock. It has a very early serial at 122. If it was totally original I would leave it that way. But I am not a collector and it is not in collector quality condition.

Here are the two I already have:
