I have two Makarovs. Giving one to Dad for xmas, which would you keep?

Would you prefer to own an East German or Bulgarian Makarov?

Before anyone gets into a twist and states this is a straw purchase, my Dad is fully licensed in the state and I will fill out all the appropriate paperwork.

I currently have an East German and a Bulgarian Makarov and my Dad really enjoys shooting them both. He doesn't have a semi auto handgun and I was thinking this would be a great present for him. My only problem though is figuring out which one to give him. Both shoot great and both are in pretty decent shape.

So if you had the choice, which one would you want?

The EG is the most expensive in dollars and probably the best in quality but like has been said give him his pick.

I've got multiple examples of them all (except chi com) and as far as shooting and reliability they are all fine.

I'd keep the german one

but you said that he really likes them. How much do you like and shoot them. If he likes and will shoot it more than you, then give him the nicer of the two.

FWIW:

I'm an old fart, so perhaps I'm prejudiced..

I would take my Dad out shooting and let him shoot both, and take his pick. I wouldn't say anything beforehand about the E.German being considered the "better of the two"..

I should think if you are generous enough to give your Father a pistol you would in turn eventually get it back....

When you get the Mak back, you will thank YOURSELF that you took the "high road" in the deal....

Best Wishes,

Give your Dad the best of the two, you will feel better that you did. After all, he is your Dad!! I know I would give my Father the better of the two if he were still alive.

I didn't vote in the poll because I am not familiar with maks, but I'd like to voice my opinion...

I have to agree with the above statement from PX15.

After all, doesn't your Dad deserve the one he likes best? ;)

RockDriver, it is simple . . .

Be generous. give your ol' man the East German, so he knows you love him. One day, you're sure to get the gun back from him.

Meanwhile, you've still got the excellent Bulgie to shoot.

It's always best to do the right thing, eh!

edit: Jeez, it looks like a couple of people agree with me here. Sorry I didn't read through all the posts before I replied.

Nothing but the best for dear old Dad, the EG for sure! Besides he'll likely take better care of it and it'll be that much more special for you when you get it back after he passes.

I would let him pick the one he want's. If your Dad is like my Dad, He has done more for me than I can ever repay him fore, so if he want's something I have or I want to give him something I think he would like I'll let him make the choice:)

Give your Dad the better gun. You'll only have one dad; mine's gone and I'd love the chance to give him a gun. Guns, like all things, are a dime a dozen, while family and loved ones are gone too soon.

Update:

Well I gave my Dad the choice and he chose the Bulgarian because the grips were a little fatter and it fit his hand better. He got the handgun Christmas day and he was oh so happy. He couldn't wait to hit the range, but we had to wait until yesterday before we could meet back up.

So, we finally get to the range and the first thing I notice is that Dad has no clue how to load a magazine. He was wrestling it like it was a jar of pickles that needed to have the cap taken off the first time. I showed him how, but he just couldn't get the knack of it. So I just loaded the two mags that came with the handgun for him figuring he'll get the knack of it as he shoots it more.

Now that the mags are loaded it's time to shoot. He inserts the mag, racks the slide, aims and pulls the trigger. The only thing I hear is the hammer falling and no bang. Come to find out he didn't slap the mag all the way home and a round didn't get into the chamber.

Ok, I show him how to properly make sure a mag is in the gun and hand the gun back to him. He racks the slide and he's once again ready to go. I watch as he brings up the gun in his right hand and his left hand is cupping the bottom of the mag well to get support as he takes aim. I figure he's good to go so I head to my lane next to him to load my mags to the E. German Mak I brought along. I hear "Bang" and the first round is off. Out of the corner of my eye I see my Dad put the gun down and I look over to see what he is doing and there is blood all over his left hand. He grabbed a rag and put it over the top of his thumb, which had a very deep gash in it.

Come to find out, he did have a proper grip when he took aim. But he changed his grip when I walked away so that his left hand was no longer under the gun but gripping the left side of the grip with his fingers wrapped around the fingers on his right hand. He then put his thumb over the top of his right hand just under the hammer. Well, it doesn't take a genious to figure out how the gash happened. Seems this is how he always shoots his revolvers.

Bad gash too. We pack up our stuff and headed to the emergency room where he needed 4 stitches to close the gash. So were sitting in the waiting room at the hospital with the bloody rag wrapped around his thumb and he leans over to me and says "I really liked how that Mak shot. I can't wait until we can go back to the range and shoot some more!" Gotta love the guy.
