This christmas my father graced me with my first real rifle, I had a BB gun before but now I finally join the millions of proud gun-owners. My father gave me a Ruger 10/22 with stainless steel barrel and a synthetic stock, he also gave me 3 hot lips 10 round magazines, the kinds that connect together, and a speedloader for those three. Now I just can't wait until we go back to Knob Creek Range so I can try it out. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
 
Congratulations, I still have my first rifle, a Marlin Model 60, and plan on giving it to my son when he is older. Good luck and good shooting.

Now tell Dad you need a centerfire:)
 
hahahaha. i had to beg and plead to get this one
my first pick was a Marlin 81TS bolt-action, but after using my dad's Marlin semi-auto, that has a tubular magazine, and an enormous amount of suggestions from other people to pick the 10/22, i picked that instead, the tubular magazine in my dad's marlin was a pain in the butt, one time i loaded all 17 rounds in there, pulled the bolt back, got ready to fire, and the range guy yelled and everyone had to unload, so i sat there and pulled the bolt 17 times.......never again :D i plan on going to a gunshow this weekend with my dad and see if there's anything useful i can get for my rifle
 
i plan on not selling mine either, one of the reasons i decided on a stainless steel barrel and synthetic stock, tends to be a bit better for wear and tear :p
 
Congratulations on the new rifle.

Now you just need to get a whole bunch of the ruger 10 rounders, and you'll be set. :)
 
next, painful step is to convince my dad to let me keep the rifle in my room instead of locking it up in the basement gun cabinet, how am i going to defend myself while i'm home alone with a gun that's in the basement?:p
 
Eject the one in the chamber first and lock the bolt open.

Of course you might have one round left in the "elevator" and have to work the bolt one more time after the tube is empty.

My Marlin is a bolt action tube feed.
 
Congratulations, kidfox. Your 10/22 will give you a lifetime of service, and you'll be able to pass it along one day. Use the experience and knowledge available in this forum to guide your purchases and develope as a shooter. If you can, hang on to all of your guns. I have many regrets over guns I've sold or traded over the years.
 
i got a quick question for you all, my parents, well, more importantly, my paranoid mother, wants to lock up MY new rifle downstairs in a gun cabinet, and my room is upstairs, so, what am i going to do when a intruder comes in and i'm home alone, use my pellet rifle? my dad has a pistol upstairs and downstairs, but i dunno where they are and the one upstairs has a trigger lock on it, do you all think it's a smart thing to take away my only protection from a intruder just so my mother will be 'happy'?(btw: my mother and happy is a oximoron).

EDIT: one last thing, my mother wants it locked up because she thinks i'll lose my temper and shoot one of them, i admit, i have a bad temper, but i have a pellet rifle and a few knives, and i haven't even THREATENED them.....do you think they are going too far?

Well, its their house...you gotta play by the rules. You start showing how responsible you can be with that new rifle, and go shooting as much as you can, don't blast but instead really work hard and do well, and you might wind up with a gun rack in your bedroom like I did.


Ok, I posted while you edited yours. A temper is a hard, hard thing to control as a youngster. Only you know the limits of it. You have to look inside and see if you can visualize such a thing...don't try to tell us, whatever you say will most likley not be true. Once you know yourself, you'll know whether you should have it handy now or not. Work on that temper, man...the ladies will appreciate it later.
 
my dad said, behind my paranoid mother's back, maybe...in a year... i MIGHT beable to have a gun rack in my room, but i live pretty far from a gun range, my first trip to a gun range was a few months ago, and i'm 16, so going to a gun range a lot is not possible :(

EDIT: I can already control my temper quite well, back in 6th grade i didn't know how to control it and it was awful in school, i used to throw chairs and all kinds of crap, but i can control it a lot better now, except when my mom doesn't back off sometimes and pushes me over the edge, which is really hard to do.
 
Had mine out on the range for the first time in a year.
A real joy to put 10 bullets onto the corner of a post-it note
at 50 yds.
 
Sounds like you are growing up

An important part of growing up is gaining the trust and respect of others..

The way you handle your responsibilities with firearms will be a part of the growing up..

Obeying one's parents whether they are "pushing too hard" or not is part of that accepting responsibilty.

When you are 40, you will discover that your mom has mysteriously gotten a lot smarter than she was when you were 16..*G*

You earn the right to bear more and more responsibility.. You are on the right track.
I know that patience is not a concept easily accepted by a 16 year old, but it will be worth it to gain the respect and trust of your elders...

Welcome to the world of shooting!

One thing you'll find about shooters is that the word "responsibility" is one of our most important. "Self-control" is another. The first means that you and only you are responsible for the consequences of your decisions, your actions. The second not only deals with your behavior--with or without a gun--but is a major factor in developing your skills.

When these two ideas are all built in, with no real amount of deliberate thought needed, you'll find that shooting and hunting are truly enjoyable parts of your life.

You might consider taking some firearms safety and hunter safety classes in your area. The local gun shop , Fish and Game department, or gun range should have information. It sounds like you are interestsed in developing as a responsible shooter, and while you may not learn a lot from these classes, they will show your folks that you're on the right path. You may also have the chance to meet other shooters and make some new friends who also enjoy the shooting sports.
 
my father is quite good with firearms safety and so far he has taught me everything i know about gun safety,which is quite good, for one, i don't walk around with a loaded gun and i don't point it at people. If i have any questions about firearms safety all i hafta do is ask him or my grandfather.:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Let the folks keep the 10/22 locked up; don't make a stink.

I felt the same way about my first girlfriend....always wanted to keep her in my room!
 
hahahahahahaha, just got back from a gun and knife show down here and i got my first gun case and a pair of compact binoculars to help me see down range a bit better :p
 
you want to keep a very tight reign on the temper I have pretty much beat up my hands and for a while I had a 4lb trigger and a 5lb finger I had to shoot with my second finger and run the index along the dust cover. and I'm Sorry just doesn't cut much mustard
for some things. but use your chances to show responsibility wisely and your folks will reward you for it. BTW I know what you mean about the long trek to shoot right now I travel about 60 miles to get my Bud and shoot with him when we play with long guns:eek:
