I just bought a gun that I've long said I didn't like enough to buy.

They are decent enough guns. However, I've been saying for a while that they don't quite do it for me. Everyone loves them and suggests them, but I wanted something different. I acknowlege that they are good guns, and to some degree the only thing I don't really like about them is that they are the gun in their class that everyone screams "you gotta have one".

Also, it is just a catagory that there were a few others that I liked a bit better. I simply planned to not buy one, at least not until I had one or two other examples of this type of gun.

On Wens I bought a Ruger MkII.

I need a .22 handgun. I still didn't have one.

I had planned to order (no one seems to stock them locally) a Taurus 94 revolver. I love revolvers and it would certainly fit my need for a .22.

I was also considering a few other options, mostly a little less mainstream- a S&W 422, a S&W K-22, a Colt SAA type in .22 (Frontier or something like that), Ruger Single Six (OK, this is fairly mainstream) or a Walther P22.

Well, I do like the regular 4" blued Ruger MkII. It isn't one of the target models with the price jacked up, it isn't the ugly (to my eyes anyway) 22/45, and it was available. Ruger doesn't have built-in locks so the local stock of MD legal (i.e. pre-Jan 2003) guns is getting low so I figure I won't be able to get this gun again for a while should I want one. Since a dealer had exactly what I'd want if I get the Ruger I figured it was worth a try.

Also, I just bought a S&W 908 online and I need to transfer it. MD does have an exception to the one gun per month law. If you buy two in one transaction you can do that and just have to wait two months instead of one before you can buy again. I figured I'd buy the .22 I need in the same transaction as the transfer. This made existing stock all the more important since ordering one would take longer and the auction gun is already on its way. I was able to get a deal on the transfer fee since I bought a gun at the same time so this was part of the bargain.

Anyway, even though it wasn't exactly what I had in mind it is a good gun. I've been resisting them more due to their popularlity anyway than anything I have against the gun (at least with the basic blued, pencil barrel, MkII version). With the price, the fact that they are good .22s, and the fact that it is getting hard to find the right one around here, I think I did well.

I hope I like it as much as the hype around here suggests I should.

Well, I've held out longer than you! I ended up getting a Hawes SA revolver in .22 to hold over my .22 handgun needs!

Have fun with your brick of ammo!

Enjoy that 'ugly' duck! :D i wasn't too happy w/ the looks when I bought mine, but I couldn't be happier w/ the performance! Congrats!!

Or apply for your "designated Collector" status I got mine by filling out 1 form and mailing it to the State Police. I can buy a gun a day If I have the money. You only have the 7 day waiting period fo each gun. No more one a month waiting!

I got the form from my FFL (Continental)

I recently sold mine. It was nice and all, I just got tired of field stripping the stupid thing everytime that I shot it..

[When it comes to my handguns, if it doesn't field strip as easily as a Glock, I ain't keepin' it...] :uhoh:

I thought this was about a Glock too...I'd love a Mark II but can't get it in my state. Congrats on your purchase. :D

I think you did well, the Ruger is a good gun but it is a pain to field strip at first. Once you get used to the process, it is one of the more simple guns to field strip. It should be accurate and reliable and well made.

I have a K-22 that was made in 1958 and it can't compeat with any of the three Ruger .22s that I have had. It is a very accurate gun but the Rugers are tack drivers! Just about any model of Ruger MKII will out shoot most of the guns you listed as possible buys.

It was my first gun (1985) and 70k later it is still shooting like a champ.

The disassembly does not need to be done every session.

Getting the pin in the latch oval is hard at first but gets easier.

Word of advice: Do not buy aftermarket magazines. They are crap.

I still have the original mag for mine and it has never failed.

But Schuey my man....you don't have to strip it down every time you fire it!
Todays ammo is not corrosive and a .22 barrel does not have to be cleaned but once in a blue-moon.
I tear down and clean mine about every 1,500-2,000 rounds or whenever it starts to misfeed a little.
I keep it in a range bag in the truck and fire it like that and the darn thing keeps coming back for more.

I've got the plastic version (22/45), and am quite happy with it. It seems to be a lot more accurate than I am, and is fun to shoot. At first, I cleaned religiously...but lately, I haven't cleaned it all. The only problems I'm having, is buildup in the chamber (i think) that's keeping rounds from chambering fully...course, that's my fault.

The first gun I ever owned was a MKII Bull Barrel that my dad gave me for my birthday.. I still have it.. It's bone-stock and shoots great.. I also agree about the factory mags, except for the 'thumb-bite' when reloading them..

I ran across this gizmo on the web a few days ago..

Looks neat.. Anyone used one??

Chaim, I'm sure you'll be happy with your new pistol.. Let us know how the first dance goes..

.22 Ruger vs.Revlover

Probably two of the most used guns in my safe are a Stainless Ruger MK11 supressed with a optima sight and a 4" S&W model 63 Stainless.
The S&W goes everywhere with me on the farm and does a great job on varmits. The ruger is fun to shoot and is used to shoot skunks and other varmits around the house the nice thing is you can shoot it with no ear protection.BTW the Ruger has only a 3" barrel the rest of the length 10" o/a is Suppresser and it will still drive tacks.

The first gun I ever owned was a Ruger Standard Model .22 autoloader at the tender age of 9. Since that time I have never been without one. I currently own a Mk. II bull barrel and a standard model with red dot sight. I also have a suppressed Mk. II ordered but it hasn't come in yet. They are great guns. I have no complaints at all. I have fired too many thousand rounds out of them to count .
I don't find field stripping them to be difficult in the least, but you have to know how or you will never get it back together.

There is a reason they are so popular. Sometimes there is a good reason to run with the crowd.

I thought this would be another Glock thread.
Whenever I am about to give in on that one I just dry fire one and change my mind. I'm still holding out (though I do think I'll probably get a Glock 26 someday and maybe a 19).

Or apply for your "designated Collector" status I got mine by filling out 1 form and mailing it to the State Police. I can buy a gun a day If I have the money. You only have the 7 day waiting period fo each gun. No more one a month waiting!
JeepDriver, it seems that every other trip to a dealer they are trying to get me to fill that out. I've been intentionally avoiding it. Yeah, the one a month law can be a pain in the rear occasionally (and I would love for the gov't to stay out of that kind of stuff) but while we have the law I figure I'll use it to keep me from spending too much money too fast. :D

...I'd love a Mark II but can't get it in my state
They won't be around here too much longer either- the only ones that can be legally sold had to be made prior to 1/1/03 because they don't have built-in locks. Actually, that was one of the reasons I caved on the MkII- if I don't now it may be quite some time before I can get one if I want one (I probably won't be moving for about a year and I doubt if they'll have locks by then, plus anytime something is that far out you never really know what will happen- I may end up stuck here yet another year, or more).

Airboss,

That is a darn fine looking revolver you have there.
