I have a Ruger Mk II stainless with the tapered barrel. One of the first guns I bought. It has fixed sights which has always been an irritation.

I have a MkII blued target model that I like but it doesn't have provisions for mounting a scope which I'd like to play with to see if it would help my shooting. My eye sight is not as sharp as it was.

The bull barreled 22/45 has intrigued me. I have thoughts of buying one based on it having the 1911 grip angle, the mag release in the right place and I could mount a scope on it.

One thought has me shooting it with the irons.
Another one mounting a scope and moving that rear sight to my taper barrel MK II and making a taller front sight to finally get that gun right.

Would it be that silly to buy my third ruger .22 autoloader based on what I'm thinking?

I have my first owned 1911 .45 on the way. A rf that I can practice with is what got this idea of buying yet another Ruger Autoloader started.

Thanks,

Good Evening Clutch,

I have a 22/45 that I bought as a trainer for my 1911. I'm very happy with the 22/45. I shoot it more accurately than any other pistol I own. It has been reliable, fun, and inexpensive.

Having said all those good things, it hasn't worked very well for me as a trainer. The "pop" of the 22 is so different from "BOOM" plus recoil of the 45 that I haven't found much value in cross training.

I recommend that you put a 22/45 in your hands and see if you think the layout of controls and grip angle will do for you what you are hoping it will.

Good Luck whatever you decide.

Dan

I have both the Mark II and the 22/45. I like the Mark II better, as the 22/45 seems rough by comparison.

I've had a 22/45 for 10-15 years. I love it. Reliable, accurate, feeds just about all ammo.

The only thing I don't like is putting it back together. :cuss:

This is the way I feel about it too! :scrutiny:

Its just not apples to apples! Neat idea, but it just seems out of place compared to a true 1911. (MO)

I would opt for a .22 Conversion slide kit for the 1911...more the same!...but still lacks the bOOm!....

What 1911 did you buy?

I bought a 22/45 for my .22 pistol and love it. I have to admit I chose the 22/45 more for the grip angle and ergos on their own merits than any idea of cross-training for my 1911. I just don't like the swept-back grip of the Mark pistols but wanted the Ruger action. The gun shoots great, points well and is so comfortable to hold! The included rail is cool, but will mar the bluing somewhat. I've gone back to irons for now at least.

If you get one, be aware that the Mark III's mag disconnect will stop the mags dropping free on their own. A carefully sized washer eliminated the mag disconnect and now the mags eject as they should.

I've had my 22/45 for almost 14 years, and it is the only gun I have that I know I'm taking to the range every time. It's just alot of fun.

I hadn't considered the .22 conversion unit. I'll have to look into that. The 1911 I'm waiting for is a SA Range officer.

Thanks,

Clutch
