On Sunday, I took my son to his first IDPA match. He's closer to 11 than 10. He finally got enough strength to cycle the slide on my Glock 17 ESP gun and decided that he wanted to join in.
He had me run the timer for him on the first 4 stages. The squad SO ran him through the last two stages.
He had a few malfunctions due to riding his left thumb on the slide. He actually outperformed some of the much more seasoned shooters on each stage. On stage required hitting an 8 inch plate at 10 yards and a second 10 inch plate at 12. He got the first one on the first try. It took 3 shots for the second, but he had watched some others empty a magazine at the 12 yard plate.
He dropped some points and had one FTN, but he had fun. He wants to do it again. Can you see me smiling from where you are?

One interesting thing. After the match, while we were waiting for scores, he was playing his gameboy with another kid at the range. I walked by to check in with him and he looked up at me with a sudden look of surprise and said, "Dad, I'm armed". I said, "Yes. There's a lot of that at shooting matches. You can put your gear away if you want." He thought for a moment and said "Later." and went back to playing his gameboy. I think he became part of the gun culture at that moment.

Something odd and interesting happend that day. His Mom / My Wife, who thinks that using humanoid targets is a very bad thing to do came too. She planned on tollerating the militant survivalists that she was sure would be running all over the place in camo fatigues and face paint. She was actually surprised by the people that she met. You could never hope to have a better bunch of friends. Friendly, professional, compassionate, you all know the type. I think that if she can get her arthritus under control, she may decide to try it too. We'll see.

Sounds like a family outing gone good. Congrats. A full mag on a 12yd plate? Where's this club at, I may need an ego boost one day. ;)

When talking to younger shooters or shooting with them I always refer them to using targets like NRA 50ft bulls. One it gives them a defined aiming point so they learn, two it is not humanoid. I figure the decision to use real targets is up to the parents alone because it should entail a serious discussion of what pistols are for and the ins and outs of life and death. Sounds like you have and will do just fine raising him, so I'll butt out :D

The club is in Oxford NC. I didn't actually see it because I was in a different squad in a different shooting area, but I heard a long string, a reload and another long string. I knew what must have happened.

ARGH! I am so jealous. My daughter will have to wait for years to join her mother and I shoot IDPA (she IS only 7 weeks old...).

Oh well.

Congratulations on what sounded like a really nice time.:)

Oh, Oxford. I drive by there all the time, never had time to stay until Sunday and shoot a match. Nice club, and I know some very good shooters(like Michael Voight and TJ) have been spotted there. I really wanted to do that three gun recon match he put on there, no time.

If you're there, I say give Sir Walter another try. I know you've got issues with competing there and your son is a little young, but when he hits 12 they have absolutely the best junior program I've seen. Be good to get him into their junior HP or smallbore programs. For you, IPSC has changed a lot with new direction and new classes. The atmosphere is very friendly to new shooters and IDPA folks. Nobody is going to be rude to youlikeyou experienced in the past. We can't survive without new shooters and casual competitors. Those in charge realize that the super squad doesn't pay the bills.

Navy joe...

You have quite a memory. I don't have issues with the club et al, but with the behavior of a single competitor and the RO who allowed it. That was a while ago. Perhaps I'll try it again. Thanks.
