Today I was talking to a friend of mine about how stupid the whole AWB thing is and how here in VT. we shut it down, and he told me the following story:

Him and his wife were watching a movie and the bad guys and the heroes start shooting it out with different assault rifles on full auto. She tells him that guns like those should be banned for common people or at the very least, be really hard for just anybody to get their hands on. He explains the 1986 ban and the difference between full-auto and semi, and the whole tax stamp FFL thing. She then says that even if there are semi-auto versions, only a crazy person would want or need guns like those. He looked her straight in the eye and asked her: "How long have you known me?" She says: "Eighteen years." He then asked her: "Have you ever thought I was crazy?" She replies: "No, why?" He replied: "I've got three of those in the gun safe."

This is why my wife knew long before we ever got married that I am a certified gun-nut and why I always let her know what I'm buying. There are no secrets in my house. She likes her guns, and although she's not into so-called "assault weapons" she respects my choice of firearms...

I think we need to make a big push to get out and make these guns more common and "socially acceptable".

I personally have an AR15 just for kicks, but I rarely shoot it and I'm a "blued and wood" bolt action guy for my hunting rifles.

I am going to make a personal point if all this blows over to build another AR15 when prices come back down - a flat-top . 300AAC Blackout. That's going to become my hunting rifle. The more frequently people see other, normal people out using these rifles, the less taboo they'll become.

Same here. My girlfriend is well aware of my addiction, and after taking her shooting for the first time last weekend, I might have given her the addiction as well (at least with .22 LR).

Single, here, but I can't imagine being married for someone to 18 years (a good 75% of my life so far, heh) and her NOT knowing the type of guns I have.

What movie was this? I wonder if he should have made the comment "so in this movie, would it have served our heroes if they had revolvers and lever-actions instead of assault rifles?"

I have AK's, AR's, and a Tec9 too, and honestly I don't shoot them all that often. But I don't feel like they are the big evil, and I sure wouldn't want anyone making laws that would ban me from owning them, or buying more of them. They are fun to shoot, and make good coyote guns too.

The average citizen doesn't have a clue about the difference between semi auto and full auto. Our media calls them the most powerful weapons on the planet, when in fact there are far more hunting cartridges that will out perform any .223 or 7.62x39 round. I punch through 1/2" steel with my .270 and 7mm RM using common SP hunting bullets. Where as, neither the AR or the AK will do much more than put a small dent in the steel.

It's ignorance among those who no nothing about firearms that allows them to be so easily influenced by media and politicians.

I gave been with my wife or over 30 years. She knew from day one I was a gun nut and a hunter. She grew up in a house with guns and hunters. She goes to the range shooting with me and watches me prime cases while watching T.V. She always recognizes when there is a new/different gun brought out at the range. Odds are tho, she couldn't tell you what 20% of them are without reading the info off the side. Not her thing. Not a big deal. We also have two bikes sittin' out in the garage we bought new. Both have over 50,000 miles on them. She has sat on the seat behind me for the majority of those miles, in the rain, the cold, and in some cases 10 hours a day or more. But odds are she can't tell you the size of the motors or where to check the oil. Not her thing, not a big deal. She still supports both my gun ownership and our motorcycles. That's the thing. That's the big deal.

Sounds like a conversation I had with my brother in law over Christmas. We had all gathered at my parents house up north and my BIL is going on about how only crazy people have these evil firearms etc... I walked to the back of the house, unlocked my gun case (I'd brought some toys with me) and walked out and handed him an unloaded 9mm magazine and said, "Does this scare you?" I then proceded to explain that the state of Tn trusts me to teach and safeguard 150 students on a daily basis but he thinks I should only have 10 rounds? I didn't dare pull out my buddy's AR that I'd assembled for him.... lol

Only problem I've had with my fiancee involving guns is she turned out to be a better shot with my AK74 than I was...and now it seems to not so much be MY AK anymore, so much as hers.

Same here. My girlfriend is well aware of my addiction, and after taking her shooting for the first time last weekend, I might have given her the addiction as well (at least with .22 LR).

But don't call it an addiction, even in jest. That's a negative connotation.

Call it something positive. Lets brainstorm.

My EX-wife was a knee-jerk hoplophobe. My fiancee goes to the range with me and has given me numerous gifts related to and including firearms. No need to sneak a purchase into the safe these days!

I'm from the UK, so until the age of 33, I had never owned a single firearm.
I had owned plenty of deactivated guns, but apart from a pinfire revolver (obsoltete ammunition) I had never actually owned a firearm that hadn't been altered to stop it working as a firearm.

My wife bought me my first ever honest-to-gosh working gun, a Mossberg 500, that I will cherish forever.
She went to the gun store without telling me what she was up to, and picked out the shotgun all on her own.
Of course, it was perfect and exactly what I would have chosen for myself.

She's a keeper :)

My wife was an Army nurse. My screen saver is a picture of her in fatigues with an M16 next to her fox hole on some exercise back in the day.

My wife and I have known each other since we were 6 yrs old...1956. She knew I was a hunter when we were 12 yrs old. She was not surprised when I showed up at her house on Christmas day 1966 to show her my present from mom and dad...a Ruger, standard, .22 pistol.

She says she doesn't know what guns i have...just blowing smoke. She knows and sknows I know it. :D She can shoot too!

No secrets here.
