I just took delivery of a S&W 1911.

Anyone else on THR own one? I also have a Colt Gold Cup and a Colt Combat Commander, both Series 80.

The Smith is the only 1911 I own with an external extractor. Two of my Sigs (226 Legion and 220 SAE) have external extractors and I like them fine.

How do you like your S&W 1911? left.png Right.png

I bought this one new circa 2008...carried it on duty as an investigator for a couple of years. I replaced the fire-control group with C&S parts and the thumb safety with an Ed Brown (if I remember correctly). Got a couple thousand rounds through it, zero issues.

S&W makes a good quality 1911. I don't care if extractor is internal or external, as long as it works, and the S&W external extractor works. I am not fond of their roll marks, but that is personal preference. I would expect that to be a good 1911.

For some reason I rarely ever see S&W 1911s here. I'm nor sure why. From the pics, they look like well made guns.

A friend of my wife has one and I was very impressed by it's overall quality in terms of fit and finish. If I came across one at a decent price and it checked out okay, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Sunny Slopes, yours is known as a “Billboard” S&W 1911 because of the large imprint on the side. Initially, deemed ugly, with many actually sanding the slide to remove it, they are now considered collectible. The eternal extractor makes this 1911 very reliable, but “1911 purists” consider it apostasy.
The early S&W 1911s were only made for a few years before the were replaced by the 1911-E series.
I understand that there is a small niche of users that use them competitively.
I like mine.

I almost pulled the trigger on a Smith 1911 from the performance center, loved the way it looked with the blue grips, than I saw the Springfield 1911 long slide in 10mm and that was all she wrote.

I don't have a picture of mine. It is the Performance Center model 1911 I bought used in nearly unfired condition. It has been very reliable with no issues and is an accurate pistol. I will pass it on to my grandson.

Thanks so much for all that information. I've got to work up some loads for the range whenever they open up the pistol range at my gun club. It's an outdoor range but we had a goose lay her eggs just behind the 10 and 15 yard berms. We've got some members who are Fish and Game and it's a federal offense to harass migratory birds.

I don't want to harass migratory birds. Shooting and eating them, that's a different story.

I have a SW 1911Sc Commander that I bought in the late 2000's. At first it was quite grumpy on jamming. Settled down with high quality mags for quite a few years. A few months ago, the mag release went belly up and the gun would not retain a mag. Sent it to SW for repair and they replaced it for free including shipping. Haven't had a chance to test it, given the interruptions of real life. I like the gun, it is accurate, fun to shoot. It's a little too big for little ol' me EDC on my belt by doable if I had to. Given carry is dead in NYS due to the CCIA and Clarence yachting and Alito in his tank rather than supporting the TRO, no reason to worry about carry in my remaining life span.

Anyway a decent gun. I do think my Glocks are better EDC but that's not to knock 1911s as good, usable guns.

Thanks for the response. It's bigger and heavier than I like for carry and is just a range toy. I have old wrists and like heavier handguns when shooting larger calibers.

I have three Glocks, but my EDC is a DAO Sig P239. I barely notice it's there.
