And I have road-marched enough- usually carrying more than any recreational hiker ever would- to have earned my preferences fairly.
Yeah, but I never had a medic nearby and someone telling me every move to make. So, when you take control of your own destiny in the wild, get back to me, John. :neener:

:D

Funny. My squad rarely marched with the rest of the company. We didn't have a medic on tap. My point was, I've carried a large knife in situations where weight was at a premium. At Fort Lewis, I was granted permission to take my kukri with me, instead of my e-tool. (I preferred my Chitlangi to the machete that was part of a mortar squad's TOE.)

In the time since, I have frequently carried a large knife in the woods, depending on the area and what I was doing.

Benchmade, ESEE, Kabar, SOG, Condor and many others make some good knives that would fit your needs in the outdoors. I like the Condor Golok machete for woods use if I am going to be cutting stuff on a regular basis. The Kabar Cutlass machete is also a pretty cool blade as is the Ontario 12" machete. Kabar Beckers would fit your needs.

I have some big knives, but I tend to lean toward fixed blades in the 4-6" range. SOG Seal Pup Elite would be a good general purpose fixed blade for the woods. You might even carry it in a small town on your belt. But honestly, I will use a folder 10x as much.

As you probably gathered, carrying really big knives concealed is generally an invitation to law enforcement interest if you are not out in the woods.
