I want a rugged, high quality long knife for my next camping trip, as so far I have only carried a small folding-blade Buck. I've narrowed the choices down to the KA-BAR Becker Combat Bowie and the Combat Utility. Both appeal to me, but I am just not sure which one to get. Does anybody have any experience with either one of these knives?

I have a CU/BK7 from when Camillus was still making them. It's a good blade. I use mine for harvesting river cane and splitting logs for bow staves. I bet that you'll find the CU too long and thick for most things. I take a Mora into the woods with me. It can't take a beating like the Becker, but it's shorter and thinner blade will make it much more handy. The fact that one will run you just a few bucks means that you won't miss it if it gets lost on your travels. That Becker really can clean out small brush quickly though.

If you're set on getting the Becker, take your pocketknife as well for the small stuff. If Ka Bar makes them like Camillus, then you won't be disappointed by the quality.

Hope it helps,
mole
