Hello,

on the rings yes those are the ones ,, and that's a good price on them on sale !!

on the DPMS rifle , it has a 18 inch barrel what are you plans on your style of shooting with it , if it's out to longer ranges 700 and plus yards then you need to pick another rifle as thats not a good choice , if it's 7 or below idea 500 and below then the 18 inch barrel should do very well out to that range .
this is where the vari pwr scope comes into play .

on weight once you get a rifle all set up like mine 16 lbs loaded you do alot of prone shooting or down on one knee , you spend alot of time with heavy rifles you learn on what works and what doesnt .

spend good money once , address what your after and what it takes to fill the role then spend the funds one time .

another way is to look and see what really good shooters are doing in their game .

F class shooter high power scopes 22 and up pwr .
tactical match shooters vari pwr scopes S&B , NF , IOR , Loopy all vari pwr scopes from 3X12 , 4X16 , 5X22 , 5X25
hunters most use a vari pwr

if anyone wants to know how i paint my rifles send me a email as i dont like to hijack other people post with other topics .

Thanks for the advice target...Almost all of the time I will be shooting at ranges of 500 and below...The more I sit here and read these threads, I'm begining to think I need to bump up my price range a little bit.

If I were to go to the $400 range, is there a better option than the super sniper? Something with variable power? I'm really thinking I need VP.

This is an Armalite AR10 with a JP float arm, 20" barrel, A1 stock (with adjustable buttplate), and a Sightron SII 2.5x-8x/42 in Leupold Rifleman Weaver see-thru rings. The scope and rings have been through two barrels on this rifle, and they've been rock solid.

The scope was $240 and the rings were $20.

Works for me. :D

Rbernie uses the same setup I do. I like Nikon scopes and 4.5x14x40 SF Buckmaster is a damn fine scope for $300.

Err... what exactly are "tactical" rings?

I swear, somewhere, there's a marketing genius swimming in a lake of gold quarters and molasses who figured out first that you could use that term as a buzzword.

So you wore the first barrel out with that scope and rings?

So you're saying I don't need to bump up my price?:scrutiny:

Theres a first for everything!:p:D

Pretty much so; it saw a lot of rounds thru it. :)

So you're saying I don't need to bump up my price?
Depends on what you're going to do with it. If you're doing the equivilent of kickin' down doors for a living and you tend to be REALLY REALLY hard on your equipment and you'll often find yourself in desperate situations without the prospect of repair/supply, then getting really expensive 'tactical' steel rings makes a world of sense. Same if you do a lot of long range shooting and need rings with built in elevation.

If you're like most of us, the Leupold's work just fine. Their tolerances in the tube clamps are very good (they 'grab' like lapped rings) and IMO, any impact/stress with enough force to bend/break the risers will also likely not leave the scope in useful condition.

I was in a similar situation as yourself recently, Bazooka Joe. It's true that you won't be getting one of the elite scopes out there for $300, but I think you can still get a durable scope that is very functional for that amount of money.

I bought a Sig 556 and wanted to put a scope on it. I will be target shooting with it mostly, but I wanted it to be versatile enough and durable enough to handle other duties if required.

I could have spent more, but after doing a lot of research I wound up buying a Sightron SII Big Sky scope, the 1.5-5x20 model. It cost me about $335 from Midway. The Big Sky line of Sightron scopes has glass that would compare with Leupold VX-IIIs, and they are very durable. Sightron offers a lifetime warranty. They seem like a very customer-oriented company, which I appreciate. This scope was made in Japan, which I really like.

My initial first impressions of this scope are very positive. The turrets are well made, adjustment clicks are repeatable, light transmission is excellent, clarity is surprisingly good. I can see details that are about 1/10 of an inch at 100 yards at 4 or 5 times magnification.

I think the only thing that I would have gotten, if I had spent 3 or 4 times as much and gotten a US Optics or IOR scope, is a little bit of increased clarity. The law of diminishing returns really starts to come into play with scopes that are more expensive than this one. To get a slightly better scope, I will need to spend 3 or 4 times as much money.

I concur with some others here and would recommend the Bushnell 4200 series. The glass in those scopes is very clear and nice, and they are a very good buy at their price point. I had a Bausch and Lomb 4200 Elite scope and foolishly sold it about 3 years ago. Bushnell bought the Bausch and Lomb 3200 and 4200 scope line a few years ago and just re-branded them. The 4200 and 3200 Elites are probably still made in Japan.

I like Leupold VX-II and VX-III scopes too, but I think the Sightron and Bushnell 4200 scopes are dollar-for-dollar better buys.

Edit: I also use some Leupold quick-detach steel rings for this Sightron scope. They work perfectly.

Edit2: Pics added.

Bushnell ELITE 3200 5-15 x 40 Tactical Scope (Target Turrets). Comes with Sun shade, standard covers, and front pop up scope cover.

Burris Xtreme Tactical 1" Rings, High 3/4".

6 Burris Base Shims, .010 thick

Burris Signiture Pos. Offset Ring Inserts: +5, -5, +10, -10, +20, -20.

Or what about the Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14-42? George also recommened this, and its not too bad of a price.

Nothing is set in stone, but if I were to buy this package, what would be a good price?

I still haven't decided what scope I am going to go with, I'm just trying to weigh some of my options.

I had these same question my self last year. check out
SWFA forms, it's on the left side of the page. You can
use the search to check out all your options. I ended up
with an elite 4200 4x16x40 for $349 delivered. Couldn't
be more pleased with the glass. As for a mount I would
go with a one piece mount, Armalite makes a nice one.
Natchez also has a close out on some Browning scopes,
their made in Japan and built at the same plant the Bushnell elite scopes are made. I bought one and it's very
clear, well worth the cash.

Scopes are things which are really hard to make a final decision about what to buy. It's because no scope will "do it all". You pretty much have to decide the one thing that you want the scope primarily to do well, and then a few other things that would be nice to have, which the scope may do a little bit. Thinking like that will really help narrow the choice down to 2 or maybe 3 scopes.

just speaking on the capability of accuracy from an auto loader, my browning shorttrac with hornady tap shoots consistently less than 3/4" groups and a sub 3/8" group isn't extraordinarily uncommon at all

as for glass it was topped with bush 4200 2.5x10x50 but it has a NV scope on it now that i haven't sighted in yet

OK, last question and I will have made my decision...

Would you rather have a

Burris Fullfield II Scope 4.5-14x42mm ballistic Plex Reticle for $257.00

or a Bushnell elite 4200 4x16x40mm mult X Reticle for $349.00?

I believe I have narrowed it down to these two, so help me out.

The Bushnell is a bit nicer in terms of lens coatings, but I'd go with the Burris due to the better customer support that you'll likely from Burris (should you ever have an issue).

If you only have one scope, durability and customer support is more highly valued than glass quality in the long run.

Awesome, well I guess I have made my decision...I just found a fullfield II for $275.00 and it comes with a free handheld Garmin GPS unit.

Thanks again for everyones help. . .I would have been completely lost without all of the help.

Now I'm only halfway lost!:neener:

But maybe with that GPS, I can find my way again :p

EDIT: I just bought it, so there is no talking me out of it now. :D
