What's the problem?
He describe a hypothetical situation. "I could steal your child." You described a hypothetical reaction. "I'd shoot you."
You never actually said you had a gun any more than he actually said he'd steal your child. You were both playing "What if."
Do what I used to do. Keep the kid on a leash. You'll still have busybodies come up and tell how mean it is to have the kid on a leash, but they'll be different busybodies. Well manybe not. Busybodies tend to be busybodies.
