I've had a joke in mind for months, and I finally got to use it today. See, I knew someone would have to know guns as well as most people on this forum in order to get it without me prefacing the joke with background information (which takes a great joke and turns it into a chuckle). Today I got the Shooter's Bible from my Grandma for Christmas, and most other people recognized "guns" this friend of my Aunt/Uncle was like "is that a Beretta shotgun?" The fact that he knew Beretta made more than the M9 told me I'd found the person to tell my joke to. And I realized that with how long I've held onto it, I need more gun nut friends. I have a lot of shooter friends, but I'm the only real gun nut.

Oh, you probably want the joke:

In the book I'm working on, I have the soldiers using the latest FN rifles, because SCARs make for a good story.

Hah!

I know what you mean, though. I'm the only "gun guy" at a tiny liberal arts college. It'd be nice to hang out with someone who doesn't automatically think that holding a gun turns you into a baby-killer with a God complex (someone said this to me verbatim once :banghead:). I hate feeling so alone.

Side note: what's with all these anarchist/liberal/change-oriented young people thinking that by being against guns, the ONLY tools of securing one's freedom from an obscenely-armed state, they're somehow "fighting the power" ? All this talk about the "gun lobby." Civilian gun companies are TINY in terms of lobbying power, the NRA gets its power from millions of individuals who want support for their rights.

Back on topic: How do people find their local pro-gun types? Local ranges? Regional forums? I'm in the Twin Cities MN if anyone wants to meet up.

I'm not sure, but I'm a bit of a social recluse anyway. I am a gun nut, but also trying to write a book and I'm a MMORPG addict in addition to working. I rarely get to the range because ammo is expensive (why my post count here is so high, THR is free!)

There's a few guys at work that like guns, and just as many antis. The one "gun guy" at work (who I was told is probably the most knowledgable guy at work) I've found to pretty much be a joke. He told me that if I got an AR-15 I should get the recoil operated instead of gas piston, because with the piston model I have to clean the gas tube. Also says the .40 S&W is a proprietary cartridge because it has the company name, so I should go with 9mm Luger or .45 ACP instead (yes, he used the name Luger).

My best friend owns one gun and is very much a supporter of 2A, but he's not a nut about it. My parents are shooters and my Dad does a bit of research, but he's not a nut like me or most on this forum.

HA! Good one.

I just converted all the people I know into firearms enthusiasts. Took em shooting a couple of times and ta da! Instant gun friends

Go to a local USPSA or 3 gun match and you'll meet the gun people I like to hang with.

I work at a facility with a large security force, most of them are gun people. But changing jobs to a place like this might not be practical.

having the opposite problem..

I feel your pain, but my problem is the opposite. Earlier this week I decided I was going to take some non-shooters out to the range and share the pastime with them. My own little mission to educate and grow the ranks of shooters.... well, turns out I can't find any. :banghead: Did not see this problem coming...

I have been a gun nut for quite some time. I remember the day I decided to take the next step in my gun nut evolution. I had three gun magazine subscriptions coming in each month. I visited every gun store in town on a weekly basis. I was a member of more than five firearm forum websites. All of my family and friends knew me as the "go-to guy" concerning firearm questions and discussions. I was getting to the point where the articles written in the magazines were not informative anymore.

That's when I decided it was time to go to become more directly involved in the firearm industry. I ended up going to gunsmithing school and graduated a year later. I have now been in the industry for six years and have loved every minute of it. It's definitely a big step to go from amateur enthusiast to professional. It gets more serious but for me it has become a deeper level of satisfaction (not that I was unsatisfied before). Ever since college, I have become a insatiable scholar of firearms information. That is now my lifetime pursuit.

I feel your pain, OP.

I have a few friends who are gun owners and shooters, but no "enthusiasts".
They are interested only in a gun's performance or features and not in the function, culture, or history.
I feel like the only in-depth conversations I have with them are when they ask for suggestions or when correcting one of their misconceptions about a particular design (most often 1911s and AR-15s/AK-47s).

Lets see, people I can hang out with who own and like guns ?

For a starter, hang over the fence with my neighbors on one side of our home, then go to the other side and repeat.

Truthfully, I don't know of any antis in this small retirement community we live in and a lot of people shoot, while having coffee on the back patio, I heard target practice gunshots this morning. But when wife and i go out to shooting spots in the immediate desert, we seldom find any fired brass, for there are also a great many reloaders here.

We are lucky indeed, out the back gate on our ATVs, a couple hundred yards. and we are on 250,000 acres of public land.

Yeah, around here, you'd just have to wear your Browning or Mossberg or Remington or what have you logo hats and jackets, strike up a conversation with someone similarly attired... at Wally's, Micky D's, wherever...

To be fair, I'm not talking about antis. I'm talking about people who like guns but arent enthusiasts like me.

I know how it feels as far as being the gun guy in your group. I have more gun buddies at church than in ANY of my other groups.
At work there are four others that have guns, however, they are not very deep into the sport/culture/activities of shooting. just the way it is.

Mark

Been blessed with a good group of guys at church who like to shoot.

I also started the snowball rolling when I asked my brother if he wanted to go to the LGS. Snowball got big, FAST! :D

Now, whenever we're in a new area of the state, all someone has to say is, "Google me up some guns!"

That's all it ever takes and the rest of the afternoon is history.

Most everyone around here has and uses guns.
I suspect at least half are true "gun nuts". They
sell guns and ammo at the grocery store and the
gun section at Walmart is very well stocked.:D
