I Now Have A Randall Model 2!!!

For a long while I’ve lusted after the Randall Model 2 Dagger. My opportunity to own one came yesterday at the Gun Show when I picked one up as part of a trade for a rifle I would never use.

I know very little about Randall knives, but I do know that I’ve never handled a deadlier feeling blade. It balances right at the hilt, the handle/guard contours lock the piece firmly in the web of my hand, and the blade is just the right length.

The sheath design leaves a bit to be desired in my opinion, but that is easily remedied.

Here is a description:

7” blade
Brass guard (spacers colored Red White Black White Red)
Stacked leather handle
Flat Aluminum (possibly nickel silver???) pommel with rounded “nut” (Spacers colored Red White Black)

The sheath is brown leather with white stitching and an orange colored whetstone (Norton India?). The retainer strap looks to never have been used, as it does not have the crease, nor does it seem to quite reach the snap. I’ve not forced the issue as I plan on making a new sheath for it anyway. The back is marked 2 7 with Randall’s seal below.

I do have a few questions though.

Any idea what kind of steel the blade is made of?

Is there any way to tell the age?

I’ll try to get better pics up as soon as possible.

It is truly a most excellent feeling blade! I’m quite excited!

Take a very good picture of the area around the guard and of the sheath buttons and send it to Randall. They should be able to tell you when it was made based on the spacer pattern/colors.

I have always wanted a Randall particularly after I visited the shop with my uncle, He said he helped Bo Randall design the cap for the survival knife. My preference is a 7" Model 1

Neat story. I have one of the Randall Survival knives and a 7" #1 in stag. Did you ever see the "staff" that was made to go with the Survival?

Since you don't mention an "S" stamped on the blade near the Randall Made logo, your knife is probably made of O1 carbon steel. The "S" designates stainless steel. Randall primarily used 440B for it's stainless knives, but there was a little 440C and now ATS34.

Very nice knife. I have a #14 with tool steel blade. Someday I'd like to have one like yours, as well.

Yes I remember a staff for a survival knife, but do not remember what it looked like, My uncle's tool box is at my cousins, I have looked thru it many times and I think many of the miniature machinings and stuff he did, including the first cap for the survival knife were lost by unknowing cousins.

I love my Randall knife

I ordered a model 16 a few years back - ordered the wife and father in law one each as well. Theirs both arrived in about a year.. mine took about 18 months. The wait for an order from Randall is about 5 years or more now....
You're gonna love it.

Randall makes some of the best "production" knives around. really they are basically hand made. the blade is probably O-1 tool steel, though they do use stainless for some knives, I am not sure what grade. Excellent pickup!
