As I've been blathering on here, I was once an exclusive handloader that hadn't bought a box of factory ammo for nearly 10 years. That meant there were times I didn't shoot as much as I would have liked because I didn't want to use up ammo that I had no time to reload. Well that changed late this fall when I bought a mosin nagant. I wasn't planning to shoot it much so I wasn't going to waste time and money getting reloading stuff for it so I just bought a few boxes of brown bear. Well, the mosin really surprised me with how fun it is to shoot and how surprisingly accurate it is with the cheap steel case ammo. It actually has become one of my favorite guns to shoot and I've put quite a few boxes of ammo through it.
That brought me to looking for a 9mm carbine since that's the cheapest center fire ammo you can buy. I got a really good deal on a hi point 9mm in december with the intention of just buying ammo for it locally when available. I really like the hi point but the factory ammo idea did not work out. I found I much prefer my handloaded 9mm to any of the cheap FMJ stuff I can buy, plus 9mm is very cheap and efficient to load.
I have been contemplating getting a rifle of some sort in 7.62x39 for awhile but havn't put any money towards it. I was looking at the ruger American rifle and an NPAP AK. As I recently said in another thread a 7.62x39 AR has never appealed to me due to needing proprietary parts and because the gun just isn't designed to accommodate it. I really really really like my 300 blackout upper for my AR but its a handload only affair for me. I had decided I was going to put away some money for an Npap AK but last week I got a $100 mail in rebate card and so I decided to try getting a barrel for my AR since the investment is significantly less.
To get the ball rolling I ordered this barrel. I got the barrel in yesterday but it was not as advertised. The barrel I got is a bull profile and weighs 37 oz instead of the advertised 32 but I put it on anyway. I canibalized my 300 blackout upper, gas tube, and gas block to put it together.

I needed a new charging handle so I got this to match my laser engraved lower

I have read to expect light primer strikes so I ordered this enhanced firing pin and extra power hammer spring just in case.

I already had a BCA 7.62 bolt. I ordered an extra BCG a month ago to use in my blackout upper and since I had a spare 223 bolt I ordered one with the 7.62x39 bolt since a friend of mine has expressed interest in building one.

Got it together today. I have not gotten the magazines or the enhanced firing pin but I got it out and shot it a bit to tune the gas block. I didn't have any light strikes so far and I found 5.56 Pmags work if you only load 3 rounds at a time in them. Have not tried shooting for accuracy yet. It only took a half turn open on the gas block to reliably cycle so its way over gassed for my buffer.
This is the same knock off Krink brake I had on my blackout. Its a bit heavy but extreamly effective at reducing muzzle blast. I shot it today with and without and it makes a huge difference
