This morning at around 3:00 AM I wake up to hearing voices in the living room. It sounded just like two people have a loud conversation. I jump up immediately and grab my Surefire G2 and quickly run out into the living room to find the TV on. Then I froze. I thought "HOLY CRAP!!!! How did the TV come on? Is there someone in the house? Crap I forgot my gun!" I run back to the bed room and have my wife call 911 and get under the bed. I grab my CZ 75 P-01 and slowly go room to room turning on all the lights. (and alway watching my back) Nothing. Not a single soul. The dog in the living room didn't bark. A short 10 minutes later the LEO's show up. The come in and look around. I offer them some coffee so the stay for about 30 minutes and then left.

I can't figure out why my TV came on. I have a Sony Wega. I don't have the time set on it so it couldn't have been the timer. The remote was sitting on the coffee table facing the opposite direction of the TV. The dog sleeps in a kennel so he couldn't have done it. I can't figure it out.

Other than instantly running out unarmed to see what the noise was, what should have done differently? I didn't really want to just sit there in the bedroom for 10 minutes waiting for the Local Law Enforcement. I have never been in a situation where I thought I would need a firearm for defense. What else should I have done?

Stopped & thought? Just a suggestion, none of us really know what we're gonna do when SHTF. "Battle plans are good until the first shot's fired!"

Yrs ago practiced "combat shooting", i.e. draw, go to Weaver, sight, shoot, etc. Only time I ever actually drew on a man I find myself squared away, Colt rolled over "homeboy"style, pointing w/ left hand, and shouting "there he is!". Hope I'm better now, hope I don't have to find out!

Stay safe!

Clipse,

Glad you learned from it with no one being hurt and being person enough to admit your goof-up publicly :)

Since I'm single and therefore have no emotional attachment to anything outside my bedroom door, I would take a few deep breaths and chill out just a little before going tactical.

El Tejon,
My wife and I neither one sleep walk. If one of us would have gotten up the other would have noticed.

Skunk,
I am glad that no one got hurt either. It could have been a bad situation but turned out to be nothing. (I hope) I learned that from now on I don't just jump up and run to see what is going on. I need to not let the adrenaline get to my head so fast and make conscious decisions. That sounds really hard at 3 in the morning.:D

How did you screw up again? Sounds like you did OK to me...other than you should have brought the CZ out with you right off the bat and not had to go back for it.

Thats it right there. That one little thing(not really little) has been bugging me. I didn't have with me when I could have really needed it. Lucky for me I didn't need it.

clipse,

Did you have your curtains open? Maybe a Cop Copter with FLIR flew over and beamed some IR in the window? Or not.

Good learning experience though...

John

All shades closed 24/7. And cops in this neck of the woods don't have copters. They are lucky to have radar guns in there cars.:D

at least you had the sure fire

and you could have shined it in the face of a bad guy, yelled for the wife to grab the gun.
I drew my pistol on a guy after work one day
it seemed to take forever to get it out of the holster.
I say you did allright, just practice what ever scenario
you have in mind and have a plan b.

I was going to suggest that maybe the signal from a neighbor's remote wandered in your window and turned your TV on, but you said the blinds were closed. When I was in college, I used to mess with my neighbor that way-we both had Sony TVs, and I could shoot out my window and into his. He never did catch on.

Are you hooked up to digital cable? I'm not sure, but they may be able to turn the set on through the box.

Then again, maybe your house is haunted. :what:

A friend was visiting me the other day when he answered a a call on his cell-phone.

During the time he was talking the T.V. came on ... three times (!!?)

I think maybe it's the same technology they plan to use in "smart guns."

Don't beat yourself up about it. The fact you have a ready gun in the house means you're way ahead of the curve already! :)

I believe tv's sometimes come on as a result of power surges. I wouldn't worry about the tv. UNLESS, other people have keys to your house and you don't have a locking method that can only be opened from the inside. I worry about that since I live in an apartment.

sounds like perhaps your on/off button may have some build up via static electricity and moisture.have seen stranger things.

Don't feel to bad abt the TV; no one really understands electricity.

One thing you might do is a dry-run and see if there's any part of the house you could safely clear or check on your own if it happens again. My house is good for a defensive master bedroom position, but no way I could ever clear it, even w/my wife. Too many bad angles, island rooms, etc.

I highly recommend investing in an aluminum foil hat. :D

But seriously, you made it out ok, and learned a lesson to boot. We should all be so lucky!

Wow, that is scary. I've heard of things like that happening before.

Of course, there could be a very simple explanation to all of it. Last year in college, we had a roommate that liked to have his music on quite until the wee hours of the morning. When he did that, we'd go into the hallway where he couldn't see us and pop the breaker. He never did figure that one out.

That doesn't have a lot to do with TVs, however. You said it isn't sleepwalking, the windows were covered, but you said that the remote was pointing the opposite direction. Is there a flat wall in the opposite direction? Take the remote and point it at the opposite wall and hit the power button -- I used to do this to change the channel on the TV while doing the dishes. The "rays" that come out of the remote can be reflected.

Regardless, you did pretty well. Next time, keep that gun handy, and everything else was just fine -- it was a very good idea to have your wife call the po-po and hide.

Glad you're okay. ;)

Well, when I was in college, I lived on the 8th floor, inside room, of a dorm with an interior courtyard. I had a great line of site view to most of the other inside rooms.

Went to Radio Shack, bought a universal remote, signal amplifier and an external battery pack.

Had lots of fun, being "the ghost in the machine". :D

In clipse's case, however, I would guess a static build up issue. Check the ground on the TV plug.

You always forget something. A few weeks ago I woke up to about 10 shots going off a little ways from my bedroom window. Took a second to shake the cobwebs loose and then I grabbed the 9mm off my night stand and hit the hallway to see if anything had broken my windows or anyone was in my house. The only problem was I left my glasses sitting on the nightstand. I can see ok with out them but in the dark and trying to see out the windows isnt too good squinting.

Turned out some jackinape decided to put a mag worth into the air in the parking lot. The joys of apartment living.

The remote was on the coffee table facing directly into the couch. Just up from the couch is the window covered with blinds.

That doesnt really matter. Most remotes dont really even need a reflective surface to bounce off of. Sitting here I can point my remote away from the tv at all kinds of things and it works fine. So if someone or something triggered the remote it doesnt have to be pointing directly at the TV.

Even then, no one and nothing was out or near the remote to trigger it. The static thing is the only thing that seems logical to me.
