I succumbed to the Panic - Bought a case of .38 Special Just Because I Still Could

I stopped by Palmetto State Armory last week one day during lunch, hoping to find some 9mm Mak. They were out but I did pick up two boxes of Federal .38Spl in the old FBI load for $15/box. After I left I wished I had gotten five or six boxes at that price. I'm pretty well fixed for ammo in the carry guns, I have the option of carrying .38Spl, 9mm Mak, 9X19, and .45ACP and I have a minimum of 500 rounds for all of them except the .38Spl.

My point is he even stated in his first post he didn't need it - just bought it cuz he could. That's kind of panic buying in my eyes. Now everybody and their brother are doing the same thing. Guys that used to go through a few hundred rounds a month are 500 to 1000 at a time. Btw 10 x's $18.99 = $190 if you spend that on a weekly range trip you make a lot more money than I do.

I cut back on number of different cartridges I shoot partly so I could limit the different types of ammo I need to stock and to make it easier to stock up. My normal mode of buying ammo now is by the case. I will shoot it up and a gun without ammo is useless.

IMHO I think a case of ammo per firearm is a good start.

I stopped by Wal-mart today to buy some rags and checked out the ammo section...

What did they have in stock?

plenty of .380 pistol ammunition and plenty of... wait for it... 7.62x39 AK ammo, brass and steel cased, take your pick.

Strange days.

Ledgehammer,I understand what you are saying but another point of view to consider is that the price of ammo in the last few months has been pretty steady with some great online deals such as "UMC 9 MM 115gr " specials for $9.99 or "S&B 380 Auto" for $12.79 just to name a few.
So even if someone does not need it sometimes people who have the spare change will buy or order just because it's there for that price.
I am guilty as charged.
I have bought a lot of ammo at some of those great sales prices over the last couple of years as well as real recently and did not need it and just today as an example point I received 300 rounds of 32 ACP from Midway and am due more 32 ACP and 380 tomorrow from Natchez and then later in the week a full 1000 round case of 380 from a GunBroker auction and each and everyone of these deals were truely not over priced buys what so ever.
I did this because it was there,the price was pretty much normal,and I truely believe ammo will be much higher in the next year or two.
At least I have a four or five year edge on the inflation which will buy more time to catch future sales as there will always be one whether ammo two years from now is $35 a box or $13.

No different than buying toilet paper in the big 48+ roll pack. You know that you will use it.

That is one of the wisest things I've heard on this Forum in a while.

Online bulk sales with delivery as by a truck on it's regular route lowers my carbon footprint even more.

Good thing there isn't a toilet paper panic buy going on right now...Lol lowering your carbon footprint is a stretch. I'm just saying a lot of people who never bought all they could are doing it now. My lgs has a 2 box limit on ammo and I think that's the right thing to do so everybody can at least go shoot instead of the guy in front of you emptying his bank account on ammo cuz he can. Its the epitome of panic buying and 1 year ago never would have happened.

Well it might not of happened a year ago but it certainly did after the 2008 election.
This guy in office gives most gun owners a bad case of nerves,thus the run on guns and ammo.

Walk into any local gun shop and ask if they have any small rifle primers. See if you get the same laugh I got this past weekend.

Down to under 20 rds of 38 so I ordered 6 boxes last night. My newly acquired Ruger GP100 is hungry and no one local has any. Only internet site I found that had any was luckygunner. Including shipping it came out to just over $26 per box for Remmington round nose.
Wish I could find ammo for the price you got it.

This is probably going to stick in someone's crawl but I received notice this morning that Midway had Independence 223 in 500 round lots for...$219.99,so I bought.
Two minutes later I could not even get on their website due to the traffic.
I dont even own an AR or anything in 223.
However, a good friend did buy a much over priced AR three weeks ago so I will sell him the ammo for the same price I paid for it because he cant find any anywhere short of the $1.00 a round at the GunBroker auctions.
When I told him he was estatic.

The funny thing is in 2008 you couldn't find .380 but everything else was still around. 2013 it's the reverse lol -
