Yesterday was our squirrel season and dove season opener. I went squirrel hunting and had some success, but found a dove roost where my son and I could come back the next day and get a little shooting in before church.

When I got home last night and mentioned it to my wife, she thought it might be a good idea. Nathan (my 6 year old) was excited all night! He even woke up in a great mood this morning.

My son did not shoot, he just went along to work the labrador. We got one dove this morning (they were not flying well today). We also saw two does and their yearlings. My son got tired fairly quickly and we went home ( I do not want to overdo it with him) and all he has talked about so far is his "hunting trip."

I do not know who was more excited over our short hunting excusion this morning, me or my son Nathan! :D

Congratulations on raising him well! Hunting with him will keep you from hunting 'for' him later. He will learn a lot in the hunting field and much more appropriately than from the 'street'. GOON ON YOU BOTH!

Thats absolutely awesome. He'll be 'the king' amongst his friends for awhile now cause he got to go hunting for real.:D

I remember the first few times I took my sons hunting. They strutted around their friends...'I went huntin'.." like it was the biggest deal in the world, (and maybe it was close...)

Shouldn't be too hard to set him up right so he can blast a squirrel...then he'd have a skin for the wall.;)

Take lots of pics, they grow fast.

Squirrel hunting will probably what he hunts for himself first. I have not had him shooting at all yet. His attention span is still somewhat short, and while I know 6 year olds that shoot and have no problem with it, Nathan will not be one of them. But it will not be long now. His interest is growing. And that makes his dad happy!
