I turned an anti co-worker into a shooter and soon to be gun owner. Never thought it could be done, but it can.

I've been working with this guy for about two years. He's pretty liberal, has never hunted or shot guns. He's into things like animal rights and computers. You know the type. Nice guy, but we don't talk politics too much, let's put it that way. The few times we did talk about gun ownership, he was very much an anti and pretty much thought the 2nd amendment was outdated and useless in today's world.

Well, after the Katrina debacle, he knew I was a gun owner and started talking to me about self-defense out of the blue. He could see the potential for possibly something happening where he would need to protect himself and suddenly realized maybe I wasn't just a crazy gun nut after all. He kept wanting me to take him shooting. I finally agreed once work slowed down enough to allow and I knew he was serious.

We spent a good 3 hour lunch at the range yesterday, and he shot pretty well. I went over all the safety rules, started him off on a .22 Ruger Mk 1 and moved up from there. He shot the Kahr PM9, the Kel-Tec 3AT, the Springfield 1911, and a Beretta 92FS. He is now HOOKED, and will be buying a Beretta 92FS or possibly a Sig or H&K of some type this weekend.

One less anti in the world, millions more to go. :)

great work! i'm glad he was smart enough to see what was happening in NO and think about it. from what i understand, gun sales down there are still pretty brisk. to borrow a phrase from Jewish Holocaust victims. NEVER AGIAN.

YES! Very good.

This is what I preach (and do myself) all the time. The road to victory is by showing the country the truth. The best way to show them the truth isn't with a bombardment of NRA facts, but instead taking them to the range and showing them that guns are not the tools of blood thirsty rampaging killers.

At the very, very, very worst...an anti will walk away with a respect for shooters and firearms. They might not like guns, or ever want to own one, or ever become a shooter. But a simple positive range trip will extinguish at least 90% of the hostility towards firearms they have inside of them. Trust me on that. I've never seen, nor heard, nor experienced for myself a situation where an anti went to the range, and left even more anti. You've got everything to win, and nothing to lose. After all, they're already anti in the first place. The reason I've never heard of this happening is because someone who is so anti, is set in their ways so much, they will not even opt to go to the range. Once an anti opts to try the range out, it means that they've opened their mind to some degree. They are willing to see the other side. That is a HUGE leap from the anti's who are completely intolerant and unwilling to deviate from their anti-gun dogma.

Every non-gun, or anti-gun person I know has based their entire position on complete and total assumptions and/or myths. It is amazing what they think when you ask them.

Don't be a preacher with stats and philosophy, you'll only confuse them or irritate them. Instead, SHOW them the way! When you show them the way, they will ask questions on their own. Like how come guns/laws __________, and that's when you answer with the pro-gun position. You answer the questions about guns when THEY are ready to listen to them, when they are ready to find out for themselves, when they are ready to deal with understanding it.

Just keep one thing in mind. You cannot turn everyone into a gun-lover. Some people will just not get into it. That's fine. Respect that, don't push it. Be happy knowing that you've made another person less hostile and far more understanding of our Right and our sport.

Very nice. The fact that you were able to educate him as to the "ways of the gun" shows that his indeed "very liberal". If he was a leftist or a righty with a set opinion you would have had no chance. :)

I'm proud of you LoneStar.:) I've been trying to convert my mom over to the light side of the force, but it's not been working. I'm going to make her read this article http://www.richardpoe.com/sevenmyths_chapter1.html . If she still hates guns, I'll give up on her.:( Maybe it'll work. She's a wonderful woman otherwise. She just has the attitude that "why worry about it" or she says to me "You spend to much time on that stuff". I'm not sure what else to say to her except "I love you a lot. I just want to protect you & for you to be able to protect yourself because I can't always be around."

Any tips?

Thanks for the support. For every one success story there's probably 50 where you can't change them I'd bet, but I thought I'd share that one success story just to inspire everyone. I'll keep tabs on this guy and we're going to start planning range trips when time allows. I think he's on the right path. If you all know any non-gunners that would be willing to go to the range with you, bring them along!!

I found it funny that this friend of mine now suddenly realizes how unrealistic and fake all those shoot-em up video games really are. He actually thought shooting in real life would be the same (as in no recoil, hitting everything you aim at, etc.) His comments were along the lines of "wow, this is NOTHING like _________(insert video game name)".

I believe a 5th level Recoilite Cleric with the proper holy symbols and in a Temple of Kablammo can turn an anti-gun zombie on a roll of 3 (D20) or better.

From a former Anti.

As i've always said:
Most anti's are just indoctrinated. They see the "guns are bad!" ads on TV, hear the likes of the Million Mom March, and the uninformed crap on the news.

Most people, if exposed to the truth for long enough, will come around.

I know I did.

It's also slowly working on my younger sister. My parents are probably a lost hope, but who knows, I might even get them converted some day.

warren a recoilite cleric with a M1A can turn an Antigun zombie with any roll of a D20!

Seriously though, turning anti's is the key. I have turned one but I have got non shooters (not anti gun) into shooters and gun owners. But for some reason every anti I ever met hates me. I have a freind I need to take shooting he says he will definilty go with me and shoot but he doesn't think he need a gun or wants one. That was the subject of my first post on THR.

Take it easy everyone

It's really interesting how many people have gotten interested in firearms and taking responsibility for their own defense since Katrina.

Keep tabs on his progress and make sure he gets some training.

+1

He is still brand new, be sure he makes safety paramount and automatic.

Also, discuss with him any incidences in the news where firearms were uused and ask him what he thinks about the incident now, what he would have thought about it in the past, and what you think about it. The seed of real life logic has been planted, be sure to grow it correctly with a little help (but let him find the answers).

He could see the potential for possibly something happening where he would need to protect himself and suddenly realized maybe I wasn't just a crazy gun nut after all.

I have a hunch a good many self-proclaimed "conservatives" were leftists before getting mugged.
